I had the chance to share a seat with another member A.J. after a couple pms we had our sights set on P5 to see what it might have to offer.
With temps hitting around 14deg when we arrived & having 31.8deg surface water temps with a 1/2″ ice skim on the river our initial idea of fishing shallow current seams was not going to happen. The core of engineers was out breaking ice up in the channel also pushing thicker ice chunks through a couple gates they opened. I opted for breaking out the 3-way rods with stickbaits & try to fish the waters that were ice free or open. Primarily higher flow areas was all we could fish to stay out of the masses of ice. After covering most all the available water we found a area that held a few better receptive fish. Not quite the fat girls I had hopes for but a couple low to mid 20″ fish that appeard real healthy with a handfull of 17″-18″ ave fish being kept that will be making a nice dinner for the both of us.Water temps were a bit cool on P5 yet but with the upcoming forcast I suspect fishing conditions & areas will only improve.Heres a couple pics from our outing. A.J. with a fat & sassy 23″ eye & A.J. again with a couple healthy fish along with a few eaters. My bonus catch for the day was a 6′ Rhino. I cant hardly wait to see what tommorrow brings. 50 deg temps & hopefully no ice! Gone fishin
