Just wondering if anybody is having some luck on pool 4.
thanks chubs
I would say the bite on pool 4 is still “fair”. It has picked up some this last week compared to the previous couple weeks, but still not gangbusters. Numerous sauger are being caught, but the size overall is on the smaller side. If you stay in the 18-25 foot range, you will find the nicer sauger. There are some nice 16-19 inch male walleyes coming off the sandy areas as well in that 8-15 foot range.
hey chubs,
I spent 10 hours out on pool 4 yesterday, got out at 8:00 am. although the morning bite for us was non existent I believe it was because we were not using the right presentation. After 6 hours of nothing we finally caught on to the right presentation. we ended up catching 24 sauger, 5 that were good eaters, even though we let them go. Also as a bonus we picked up a smallmouth, a shovelnose sturgeon, and about a 10 pound carp that hit a 1/4 oz jig and a fathead. so if you like me and just needed some fun time in a boat, instead of on ice, I would definitely head out there, we had a blast. good luck. jd
J_D,
Sounds like you had some pretty fast action in the afternoon! You say you got things figured out in the afternoon. Would you mind sharing the depths or any presentations that you were using? With the warm weather this week, things should really start hopping soon.
Thanks for the info. I am going up there this sunday. Hope to see you there
Hey Chubs I was out last Thursday and we also had a slow morning bite , what changed or luck was plastics, K grubs and 4″ finnese worms, K grubs fished vertical with an occasional pump, holding still just off the bottom, or casted out and slowly dragged in, the worms worked casting up shallow and slowly bringing it back in, we got about 10 walleyes between 16-20″ a nice smally about 3# and a couple dandy carp that tasted good out of the smoker, I’ll be out there Sunday also hope to see you there!
Dustin, Rob Stevens and I fish yesterday afternoon and again today (Wednesday). Tuesday afternoon was solid with 14 or 15 walleyes (can’t rightly remember exactly) from 17 – 20 inches making it to the boat in the last couple hours before we called it a day. About 2/3 of the fish got caught on a oystershell ringworm, most of the rest on a firecracker k-grub and of course Rob always has to be a little different and he did manage one nice walleye on a hair jig n’ minnow.
Today was horrible. To put it bluntly. Lots of smallish saugs and a few decent fish coming from mid-channel below the dam but the walleye bite along the rip rap and up on the sand flats was dead-dead-dead! We did boat some nice sized incidental sauger while hunting the ‘eyes but I can actually say we never boated a single walleye today of any size and got plenty cold and wet trying.
MAN I hope that it picks up by this weekend. When you are taking the sand flats are you talking right before the “Y”? Other than that I hope to see you on the water this weekend.
Just a ditto on the last few repoorts. We got there Monday afternoon during the “snowburst” which was entirely unpredicted and not forecasted, but managed to leave 4 inches on the ground ina couple hours. So we waited it out and fished from 2 till 6, and managed a fish fry worth for the evening. Tuesday am wasdead.dead.dead. as James said, and we couldnt even find the confidence builder sauger, But things picked up in the afternoon and got a few sauger in the 16 to 20 inch range, and dozens of the cigar size variety, all on the dam drift. . Depths of 18 to 22 worked for us, some on plastics, and some on lindy rigged minnow. Wednesday, slow agin, so we pulled out about 2. Got two smallies, couple flatheads, couple crappie, and some cigars. All in all, sure beats the office.
Same, or worse, for me on Tuesday. Fished noon to 6pm, spending most of the day casting riprap & sand flats. Nothing. Only fish I caught were up at the dam with the crowd doing the veritcal jig thing…and even there only 2 sauger and 1 crappie.
Lot of eagles around, and geese as well. There was a group of 3 “old timers” in a older ProV, carring on with jokes and cutting up…its was a real hoot listening to them. and.. alot better than the office.
Best of luck to you.
Inge
Thanks guy, The way it sound I need all the help I can get. Well if the fish are not biting then I gess the I will have to do the unthingable . I hope to see you on the river sunday.
Hoping to make it up to pool 4 this summer not real sure on the dates yet but probobally july or agust. Do want to try some night fishing. Any preferences on either of those two months or any other information would be greatly appreciated
I would definitely point you to July over August. In low water years, August can be quite a challenge. If we have above average rainfall, July can be awful darn good in the river yet. Otherwise, head for the lake and troll, troll, troll!
i haven’t been out yet but if anybody knows How far are the males away from the spawn and are there any females up yet
