    Some of the best places to fish are the flats and Maied Rock. Was are you of yours.

    May? North end of Pepin or the bottom end of the river above Pepin on the flats. fun stuff. Trolling cranks or dragging rigs n’ bait.

    So;

    Is that a “blind troll” of huge flats? I’m not too familiar with that area, as for stucture. Are these sand flats that you are crusing around? Or, is it contour trolling?

    As much as it pains me, I have to agree with James on this one Top O’The Lake for easy fun

    Nothing is ever really “blind!

    The flats I’m speaking of are just huge flats that range from 2 – 8 feet deep for the most part. It’s the subtle changes in depth and current that concentrate the fish. If you hit the bouy line itself then there’s some contour trolling to be had but even in that location I tend to opt for the top of the flats away from the breaks.

    Yup.. sand. Or at least the major component is sand. Some small rock, clams and silt in some places.

    When most people fish flats they tend to think of it as one spot. It pays huge dividends to think of pieces of an individual flat. Every flat has small breaks and variances which hold the majority of the fish. If you break down each flat into these littles spots you can eliminate much of the nonproductive water on these flats.

    I find that it also pays to ask yourself questions when each fish is caught in any area. If you ask yourself the “W’s” you can teach yourself a whole lot about an area and the fish in it. Where did you catch the fish? Why was the fish in this spot? When did the fish bite? What were you doing when this fish bit? I try to ask myself every one of these questions with every fish I catch. I feel that understanding why a fish is in a spot and what triggered him to bite has made me a better fisherman. I can often transfer this knowledge to many other spots on the river. I honestly believe this is the difference between an average angler and a great one.

    Cool!

    Thanks all for the info.

    Now that I got a decent boat that can handle bigger waves, I will be playing around more this year!
