I fished Pool 3 from the Hasting dam down to the Prescott for about 5 hours Sunday morning/early afternoon but didn’t find any fish. I tried several of the usually winter techniques in several locations but came up empty. I tried up by the tailwaters, wingdams, sand flats, cranks, jigs, ringworms, etc. but zippo. Several boats were out but I didn’t talk to anybody else. I didn’t notice anybody catching any fish. Maybe I should have tried shallow (3-6 ft.) but I didn’t think of it until I was driving home. Anyway, the season on that stretch is now closed until the opener. Thank goodness for year round fishing on the rest of the Mississippi.

Hey Boone, is that landing by the dam open yet? I went by there last spring and it looked like they had it closed for the season. Thanks, Vern

just remember that the dam at hastings is under inland water MN rules…. which means normally by this time of year its closed… Im not sure that that means this year…. seems I heard something about an extended season… but I dont know if they did it…… normally by now pool 2 and 4 on down are the only game in “town”….

Yeah, I’m just curious about the landing. I think they were doing construction or something last year. Wasn’t it closed for the whole season last year? I’m actually looking for some new catfish water so I’d like to explore that dam a little bit. For walleyes I’ll probably put in at the Ford dam this weekend. Thanks, Vern

    Vern,

Like Rivereyes said, the Hasting public launch reopened last fall. They didn’t really do anything to the ramp itself. It’s still the same slab of concrete. They did change the road bed and expanded the trailer parking by adding a gravel lot. I was hoping they would add a dock but maybe they can’t do that due to the barges and the current.

There is a bait shop at the foot of the bridge if you need bait. They even carry the ringworms that so many people on this board talk about. From this ramp it’s only a few miles downstream to Prescott and the St. Croix.

Good luck finding the cats. In 2000 I caught two big flatheads in Pool 3. One was about 38″ and the other was 39.5″ but both of these were downstream several miles from the dam. I’ve often seen people fishing for (I assume) cats right by the railroad bridge just as it was getting dark. There’s a deep hole (45+ ft.) that runs under the railroad bridge.

    Good Luck,

    Boone

That would have been either me or Dirk W. Stop by and say “Hi” this year!

They did change the angle of the launch, and with the current, it makes it a little hairy for bigger boats to pull out. It may just take some getting used to.

Hey, thanks for the great info you guys. Nice to know that there’s a bait shop nearby. Being in Mpls., I usually fish the Minnesota River for cats and Pool 2 for walleyes. Just thought I’d try some new water without having to fight the crowds. Thanks, Vern
