A change of plan kept me in town this weekend. Hit the milk run on pool 2 with brother Todd this morning at first light. Not fast and furious, but picked off an aggressive bite on each wing dams we hit. Fished 4 spots for 4 fish in 4 hours. Three of those fish bit big paddle tails and one on a big DT10 Rap.

On the first cast on spot #1, I picked off a nice chunky fish in that 23-24 inch range. Nice fight to the boat when she headed right into main channel current. Come to find batteries dead (or froze up) in the 2 cameras we had in the boat. So that fish didn’t get to say hi to ya-all. The other fish were in that 20 inch range and not really picture worthy.

I knew I had a fresh set of batteries in the boat. So after rummaging threw every compartment I finally found them. I had a feeling it was just a matter of time before one of us was going to pop a piggy. So now we are good to go on the camera.

Last fish on the last spot we fished was a uber chunky 28 3/4. This fish has been eating well!

Lions Levee still has a the dock in. So for you guys who don’t want to beach your rig or are fishing solo its good to go!

I’ve got a couple PMs asking about what kind of paddle tails I was throwing. James Holst turned me on to this style of plastic. Had to have been 10 or more years back now. Saying something along the lines of…. “Big baits = Big fish in the fall. Don’t be afraid to upsize anything this time of year”. He pulled a couple out of his pocket and said give these a try. I did!

I tried to find the on-line company I bought these from but can’t seem to locate them. So if anyone finds a similar bait, please let me know as my current supply is running low.

I’m tossing these on BFT Precision jigs in 5/8ths weights. Adjusting weights as needed. As mention by other recent pool 2 reports and updates, the fish are holding on the deep ends of the dams and you need to get that bait to hold down there in current.

Yea, it was a little nippy. 18 degree start with a 10 mph breeze out of the north. It’s that time of year!!

I still cart those around too, JJ. I can’t even remember where I got them but I think I went in on a BIG order (several thousand pieces in various colors) when they first came out but I’m getting old and I can’t remember for sure any more. The company was out of California, I do remember that much, and they wanted an arm and a leg for them 10 years ago. If they’re out of biz I’m sure that’s one of the reasons why.

Anyway… they’re NOT one of my fave every day baits but any time you need a bait with a TON, and I do mean a TON, of action, that shad has a kick like no other. The black over gold is my favorite on the river.

Fish Traps are the common name for baits like this out on the West Coast. I used to use those for fishing the kelp paddies on the big pond. My kid caught a nice walleye using a 5″ Fish Trap on a wing dam a couple years ago.

The ones I have been using are Lunker City “shakers” in 6 inch. Fish have no problem taking them down!!! Slaughter them to be honest!

I have a very similar style bait made by “Munchies” plastics that I’ve thought about throwing.
Nice fish Jon and if that’s the dam I think it is, I hear that not a lot of fish are on that one but when there is it’s usually a nice one.
