I am new to this site as well as fishing any of the pools, so please pardon my inexperience.

I generally fish Mille Lacs, Leech, metro lakes and Oahe, but I would like to start fishing out of the Red Wing area, so I have a few questions:

Pools – How do the Pools compare as far as fishing?

Ramps – Where are they and what type of condition are they in this time of the year?

Fish – Where does one get started? Should I start with typical walleye structure (i.e. points, breaks, etc.)

Presentation – Jig and Minnow, three way, lindy…

I appreciate any help you are willing to offer.

    Thanks, Turk97!

The easiest way to start is to jump in the boat w/ someone from the board who has fished a particular water before. Or, keep your eyes pealed to reports on the site. Very timely, very accurate, and overly generous w/ the details.

Pool 4 (Redwing dam to Pepin), lots of great accesses, good numbers of sauger & eyes, some decent fish.

Pool 2 (Ford Dam to Hastings), fewer fish, harder to find w/out info, better quality less boat traffic, catch and release only. Also good accesses.

Pool 3 (Hastings to Red Wing) never fished.

St Croix-can be good. Less fishing traffic than Red Wing, more pleasure boats. More water, I found it harder to learn. Lots of access, but most charge $10-15 per launch.

Jigs and minnows used by most (I assume), then 3 ways and cranks. More experience fisherman pitch cranks, jigs and plastics. Lindys are tough because of all the snags. Also, river fish are much more aggressive, so you rarely need to give the fish time to take the bait.
