I tell ya’, today just erased all the bad days ice fishing this year. We were pulling doubles and even had a triple catch, unreal . It was a great time and I bet the other boats thought we were nuts . We were throwing fish back that were nice and fat. After today it really bites that the work week (for some ) has to begin.

I did pretty good, only one female sauger . Them eyes have all sorts of secret weapons to nail ya with. They sure have some juicy looking fillets. Just throw a little super glue on the finger and your good to go .
March 1, 2004 at 1:37 pm #294697Slop Bass–we did all our fishing on the east side also. Got a question for you guys, Can you ever remember seeing the fish that far down in the water before. I don’t. It is fun watching the fish come up before you can net it. Just wondering if others are noticing the same thing. Thanks John
March 1, 2004 at 1:48 pm #294699I agree 100%. We could see about 8-10 ft. down. Usually don’t see that “Clear” of water w/all that turbulance…..it was kind of cool to watch. The only bad thing is that we Saw Tony lose a monster Walleye!!!
March 1, 2004 at 10:24 pm #294651Slop and Watson I owe you two a couple of cold ones. Taking your info I started way down from the crowds up by the damn and did it pay off. I didn’t catch a lot of fish today(maybe a dozen total) in 2 1/2 hours of fishing but they were all quality fish. The wind seemed to be coming out of the east but I worked my way across the channel starting at the metal retaining wall to the other shore line. I brought home 1 nice sauger and three plump walleyes. All fish were male. which surprised me a bit. I started with the purple/white hair jig and a stinger but broke the last two I had because the fish would just inhale the minnow.
March 1, 2004 at 10:30 pm #294569Good to hear ! That area seems to hold some good size fish. We didn’t get into too mant small ones the whole time we were out. Did you play hooky , or go after work? I would like to get out this week again, but it might be chilly. The fish were definitely hitting hard on Sunday. There were also quite a few short hitters, but the eyes were very aggressive.
March 1, 2004 at 10:44 pm #294775Hey Phish Phinder
Pa and I were out for the afternoon. Looked for your boat, but we stayed up by the dam. I assume you were downstream all day?March 2, 2004 at 12:14 am #294811No comment on work, if you get my drift. You are exactly correct on the walleyes. All of my walleyes hit hard but the saugers were all caught on stingers. I have heard an east wind the fish bite the least, I don’t know if this is true but it seem like you had to work a little harder today. Still a blast to be catching fish on regular basis. I figured the weather is only going to get worse the next few days so I had to go for it today. Good luck to all who venture out.
March 2, 2004 at 12:20 am #294813Yeah (cough, cough ), self induced flu sure is fun . I might bundle up and head out sometime this week to Genoa, or head to Tremp if I can get in there. I will probably be off work for at least a few more weeks if not longer. Need to fish as much as possible between now and then.
March 3, 2004 at 12:47 pm #295001Here is a picture of the ice floating down last Saturday before the Dam opened up.
March 3, 2004 at 12:49 pm #295068Sorry…these pics aren’t digital, But here’s one of Tony and a nice sauger.
March 3, 2004 at 1:53 pm #295075SB I must be missing you on the water and the landing. I have so much going on this time of year that I never know when I will get on the water each day. Yesterdy it ws 11:30-
3:30… Lot’s of dinks being caught. Larger females moved yesterday just out of the current, but they sure weren’t biting very aggressively,(actually not at all), later yesterday when the wind got strong out of the north my bite slowed to a fish every 20 minutes or so. Caught some nice size sauger yesterday, but as usual I was spending most of my time running around with electronics looking for pods of bigger fish abd trying to get them to bite. I think I’ll take some minnows with next time and see if it helps bring the bigger ones off. I don’t spend much time even looking at deeper water but even when I did float over the 30s and deeper the bigger marks weren’t there. The depths of 17 – 25 again yesterday,(pretty safe bet any early spring), held the bigger marks with an occasional group of larger marks in 10- 12 feet. In the 24ish depths you can go over the fish numerous times and mark them, but shallower as in 10-15 they scattered pretty quickly. With all of the tributaries over there banks for the last 30 + hours I expect the water to be milk chocolate pretty quickly. Water clarity changed considerably throughout the afternoon yesterday. About 3:00PM the debri started getting more noticeble , too. I don’t often see a full sheet of ice above the dam so I don’t know how freely the debri will keep coming but whoever is out today might update us.March 3, 2004 at 2:15 pm #295084LE~
I’m around here and there…I know it’s always difficult to locate people when you’re out….especially if you’re not really looking for them.
What kind of lures are you throwing? Those bigger females will start biting soon enough….Water has to warm up a bit..but by then I’ll be BASS fishing!!
March 3, 2004 at 8:18 pm #294928Well today the river and the eyes humbled me pretty good. We fished the dam from 9-1 and got skunked . We fished in the 12-25 foot range. Fro jigs we tried plastics and hair jigs tipped with minnows, all vertical jigging. We ended up with four hits and no fish. The water is definitely muddy with some debris coming down. The water level is also up considerably since Sunday. In talking to others at the ramp, they also concluded the bite was not happening .Oh well, you can’t always hammer em’ . I will however be ready to hit it again this weekend.
March 8, 2004 at 9:09 pm #295770I went past Genoa today and there were only about 15 vehicles in the lot and about three boats by the dam. They have the dam closed now but when they open it watch out. The ice and wood/debris that is stacking up on top of the dam goes back for at least mile as Hwy 35 goes. I heard that there were only a couple of boats there Saturday as well.
