5a surprise

Alex and I hit 5a Tue morning and found walleyes on wing dams out of the faster flow. Jigs with no more than 1/2 crawler as many short hits. The highlight of the morning was not a walleye however. The dead stick was acting funny so I picked it up to free it up from whatever it had fouled up on. Well…. after 10 minutes of Alex and I taking turns fighting the fish, it finally came up to the surface. I just bought a nice Beckman net and had second thoughts about whether it was going to handle the massive fish. It measured 44 inches long and was 13 inches across the head. Our scale tops out at 30 pounds and was no match for this one. Any of you guys with more experience with big flatheads care to estimate the weight? Alex and I would like to know. Of course she is back down in the depths, waiting to tear up the tackle of the next lucky fisherman!

Well I’ll let the experts chime in, but at that length and with what looks like a healthy girth, I’ll put it at mid 40s. Don’t get too excited until others chime in though. They’ll have a more accurate assessment.

Either way, congrats on the pig! Mid summer on walleye gear is quite an accomplishment.

    Jig and a crawler, eh?

come now Brian K and River rat Randy, there must be some fair estimate on the wt of that fish all calculated in those sophisticated brains of yours. shoot us some numbers so we can start rounding them up to create that base number to lie off of when telling stories. We’d sure appreciate it.

River Rat Randy??? Estimate the weight of a cat??

At his age, weight goes by if he can lift it or not. Anything over 15 pounds is call 50.

It’s too bad you didn’t get a measurement all the way around it’s head. Darren the stat master could have given you a pretty darn close number supported by data.

Just going off my experience and discounting the first picture because of the camera angle, I would give her all of 45 pounds without any stretch. I think a person could get away with 48 pounds and few would contest it.

But one thing for sure, you guys did a outstanding job getting her into the boat on 10 pound line!

Truly a photo for the wall!
