I see a post from BK, the mayflies hatched. Does that mean I should go somewhere else? I would like to try to catch some walleyes trolling or jigging at Lake Pepin, good idea or bad idea with the hatch going on? Thanks all

    Yes you should!

I would stay away from the dam area and DO NOT fish between the wing dams up there. Especially on the inside corners!

Another place I wouldn’t fish is in the Vermilion. Not only won’t you catch any fish, but there’s got to be 300 boats in there…well, maybe 2.

Hay Creek isn’t holding a fish at all.

I know for a fact that you’ll be skunked along the rip rap in Red Wing…and certainly no sense in going further down stream.

You were talking about flatheads right?

PS I’m waiting for a photo of a 10.25 pound bait stealing walleye from this last weekend caught at one of those locations.

It’s funny how them dang things will take a 6 inch bullhead over a may fly. I’ll never figure them out.;)

Fishing during the mayfly hatches is usually very good up in the river around Red Wing. Back in my guiding days it was one of my favorite time periods to be on the river. A blue Draggin’ jig with a leech (dark black and medium to small in size) put a hurt on a lot of fish. As for the lake, the trolling bite usually slows when the hatches get heavy but you can still nail fish if you fish tiny jigs or light 3 – way rigs and leeches or 1/3 to 1/2 crawler.
