Pool 12 – just a quicky report

Just a quick one on pool 12 –
On Thur. the 10th there were a few co-operating on the wing dams. Tried crawlers on a 3-way, plastics and blades. Crawlers won on this day. All fish were caught in the 12-14 ft range and with a very slow presentation. Picked off a couple for the tank and a fish fry later that night. Slid a couple more back into the water that were too big and a single little 12 inch’er that was on “attack mode” came to the boat. Feisty little fella. The over sized ones were in the 22″ range. No biggies, but still fun. Went back out on Fri – nuttin’. Not a single hit. Even tried some stumps in the back waters for some gills….and nuttin. I guess that 12 incher must have ratted me out to the other fish Maybe it was the weather (who knew the Midwest had a monsoon season????)

The flow was mildly up and water level on the south end of the pool was running pretty normal. Maybe a couple of inches up, but not much.

Had little visitors on Sat/Sun, so time was spent with other activities.

All in all – another great time on the mighty Miss.

I was out with Robert on Sunday from about 3 till 7 right below the dam in Dubuque. Our adventure was dry, but regrettably walleye free. We tried cranking and casting jigs to wingdams on the main channel, trolling in both the main and back channels, and finally called it quits and started pitching laydowns for bass.

For some reason, I just suck at catching walleyes. Bass I can catch pretty well most of the time. I just don’t have the knack, I guess. I think I’ll spend some time this summer trying to learn the Dubuque area, though, since it’s probably the closest/easiest to get to from home.

Gianni – I can attest to the learning curve of pool 12 walleye. Growing up as a lake fisherman, the river can really make your head spin. It took (and still taking) a few years to figure them out….but its worth it. When things start to come together, lookout, it is simply addicting. Stick to it, you’ll figure it out, and if all else fails, those green carp are just around the next tree snag.

We camped at Massey Saturday night and hung out @ the beach most of Saturday. Fished a little bit in the late afternoon, but I think the flow must’ve been pretty high, since most of the spots where people directed us seemed to have a little too much current.

I did end up picking up one walleye on the way back to the dock (in fact, like 15 feet from the dock, making the other 15 miles of river we covered seem, well, rather rediculous). Regardless, it was an absolutely awesome day to be out, and a good time was had by all.
