Just a thanks to all who post and give us a chance to enjoy the river even when we aren’t able to make the trip ourself. This was my first time to the head of Lake Pepin. My nephew and I picked up 14 saugers/walleyes with a couple of decent eyes(17-19) and the rest saugers. Kept enough for a meal for our families and returned the rest. We bounced jigs in 7.5 fow then had the best luck trolling upriver with 3 ways and spinner rig with a crawler harness. Beautiful morning on Memorial Day. Thanks again to those who share.

Sounds like you had a great day, not only did you read the posts but turned them into a game plan, this site is the best for that!

So, I am just updating the post as I have been to the head of Lake Pepin 3x including Memorial Day. I continue using 3 ways w/ crawler harnesses achieving success for my expectations(16 sgr/wl, 14 s/w, 6 sgr/2 cats). I troll upriver in 7-9 fow and find the bite slows as morning turns to noon. I have some questions if anyone would care to share their perspective:
    – Do the fish work their way down the pool as the summer progresses?
    – When is it better to use a floater on the spinner rig or go without?
    – Does length of line from 3way to swivel-sinker make a difference? I usually run 12-18 inches.

    Thanks for any advice.

Let the fish tell you what works! I know that is a generic reply. But true none the less. In the shallower water as the year progresses, typically, you will find covering water dragging jigs downstream with bait and pulling cranks upstream will be much more efficient method of finding active fish.Once you are on them, rigging is certainly a viable option.Dropper lengths normally vary based on water clarity and stage & flow. There are always resident fish in the entire system, but water coditions really dictate the concentrations in my opinion.Have fun fishing!

Thanks for the advice Dean! I will take it into consideration as I plan future trips.
