Main Channel Versus Sloughs

In a pool such as 9 or 10 which have such extensive amount of running back water sloughs what would your thoughts be as to the amount of walleyes using the sloughs versus main channel? Or maybe conditions through out the summer that cause fish to use one versus the other…

Just trying to get a feel of where I should be concentrating my efforts…

If water is moving thru them, I’d be targeting them all summer long. Get some dragging jigs and catch the fish others are missing!

From my experience on Pool 9 during the summer…..sloughs are where its at Pool 9 as you know is full of nice sloughs with nice current going through them. Trolling has been very good to me when I have had the opportunity to fish down there from May-August.

I firmly believe select wing damns hold walleye all summer long. However I also believe running sloughs generally hold better quality fish than main channel breaks and wings during the summer months. Don’t be afraid to spend a little extra time on bends where these sloughs seemingly start to take more of a western direction rather than south especially if there is any nearby cover ~ at least on P9.

    Jeff,
I’m with Doc on this, if you have current and decent depth in these sloughs you should have walleyes. Closing dams in these sloughs can really be a magnet even in low summer flows.
    Good luck!

On the upper end of 9 there a quite a few sloughs that break west off the main channel into the Mn slough. Some are guarded by closing damns and some are not. Some are pretty good for walleye at various times of the summer period pending river stage.
