Looking for a WI side landing closer to the head of Lake Pepin. Noticed one on the WI DNR site in Bay City. As I’ve never used it, is this landing ok for a 17.5′ Alumacraft?

Ample parking here? Any info appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Eric

If I remember correctly it is very shallow. Current river conditions may make it better (deeper).
I suggest the upper landing in Lake City or Frauninac (sp).
I am sure someone will fill in the names correctly for me.

There is a nice boat landing there in the campground. many boats use this ramp and bigger boats than yours. The Bay City Flats are relatively shallow. 3 -4 feet coming out of the cove where the ramp is and then gradually gets deeper. If you are careful….no problem. Good access to the head of the lake, Wisconsin back channel, and directly down to Maiden Rock, etc… I have used this ramp for many years. Also has a fish cleaning station. Nice campground also.

with the water levels still up a bit you will be fine. It can get dicey later in the year as the levels drop.

Eric I used to go out of this harbor alot be careful and watch the stage of the river. If you come out of the harbor and want to go the back channel go staight towards the Bay City flats and hang a sharp right to get into the Katrina. I have seen alot of boats hit stuff between the harbor and the katrina. By the way Eric I fished Maiden Rock this past monday and only caught one white bass, at that time the river was on the rise.

There is an access in Frontenac but it is a private access it is run by an association and they ask for a donation if you use it and I believe they kind of look the other way.

I thought homeland security had the road closed going past the airport and you couldnt get down the hill to goose lake. I thought the shack on the stilts and evrything else was gone, you used to have to pay 3-5 dollars to launch at goose and it was gravel sand shorline right into the deepest hole on goose lake. This is home to monster pike in the winter becareful though lots of active springs.

Did they dredge Maiden Rock out? It was always super shallow there.

X2 that unless they dreged maiden rock I dont think you could launch there. The Hokslia launch is one of my favorite launches if im fishing the lake but if your fishing the head of the lake Covil is much closer. I dont think I would cut through Kartina either. Id take it slow and go around the tip and head up through lilly pond. There was a ton of trees (like damn near blocked) the last time I looked in Kartina.

Twenty years ago you could launch there for a fee. Now it is private and closed to the public.

The landing in old Frontenac is owned by township, paid for by the frontenac sportsmens club..florence township taxspayers pay to maintain it ,and in the last couple years the use from out of towners has sky rocketed, some days you cant even park down there

The Frontenac landing has very limited parking, I think you can get maybe 8 rigs in there is everyone parks where they are supposed to. It is far less if you have a lot of beach goers.

Yesterday morning the Hok Si La landing was full out to the highway by 8:30AM – I think there were already 8 rigs on the street. The Lake City ramp was also onto the street by 8:30 but that’s holiday traffic for you on a beautiful day.

Unless your running a really small boat I think covill is the ticket. Certainly on busy weekends. I have a 75 hp and can run from covill to Lake City in less than a half hour. There is always parking there I think it can hold upwards of 100 rigs. Plus if you decide to fish the river your close to that too. The only bad part is alot of people (pleasure boaters that use their boat once a year) that cant get their boat on or off the trailer. But I think your going to get that everywhere but Everts. I launched at covill yesterday and didnt have a single issue very short wait and again ample parking.

A quick update, I made it out of this landing today, wasn’t able to make it out fishing the week before.

You may be ok this weekend, MAYBE but you’ll be digging a channel with your prop out of this landing. I run a 17.5 boat and a 115 and it wasn’t pretty today. I lost almost an hour trying to find a good way out of that bay (was my first time there). Any lower and you’re SOL here.

If you do launch, stay way to the WI side, closer to the bluffs, follow your contours on the GPS and you’ll be ok. No rocks or stumps encountered fortunately.
