Used Penn 209’s and less expensive South Bend trolling rods from Fleet have served me well for quite some time.

Most of the combos out there are pretty good for eyes. Its the salmon that you want to step it up for.

I have Cabelas depthmasters and the 8’6″ rownrigger rods are better than the extendable but the extendable are a nice feature. Generally around $70 or less for the combo. Okuma and diawa have good combos that are comparable in price. I would suspect that Gander there in Roch should have some good combos for eyes.

Make sure the rod is a sensitive tip to help detect a fouled lure. -Mark

The Cabelas rods comboed up are usually a good option. Ugly Sticks work as well on the less expensive side.

This reel will hold 10 colors, has a clicker, silky smooth drag and will last you a lifetime. All for under $70 bucks!

I use the depthmaster combos. I’ve used both the 8’6″ and 9′ planer board rods and the work well. I switched to another brand for the long rods, but I still use the 5′ “shorty” depthmaster rods with leadcore.

Most reels/rods will do the job, just get enough spool capacity for the amount of core you will use. Accudepth 47’s will have plenty. Some of the el cheapo Gander IM7 trolling rods (~30$) work just fine, as do Diawa heartlands, etc.. For longer rods, just try to avoid “noodly” rods that give too much. You need a litte bit of stiffness in that longer leadcore rod so you can watch the rod tip for any sort of lure action deviance. Snagged a weed, not running right… Makes a difference.. That being said, if you are only getting one rod to run straight off the back, I’d just get a shorty or regular length rod (up to 8.5′, maybe). If you are setting up 3 or more leadcore setups, you might want to look for more quality longer rods.

One nice thing about the cabelas brand stuff is that is basically has a lifetime warrenty, you can bring it back years later with no receipt and they’ll replace it.
