Wind and walleyes

Focused on pulling cranks in Pepin today. We tried Bay City Flats first and had one hooked up that didn’t make it to the boat, nothing more for us there. On to Maiden Rock; found the highest concentration of fish in 13.5′ to 14.5′. Nothing to write home about but we did pick up a few for a hot grease release includig a bonus 12″ crappie. The fish today were very particular on color, purple flash in #5 and #7 on lead worked equally well and much better than any other color. Speed was a little tricky with the wind but something around 2.1 worked well for the walleyes, above that and it was mostly saugers. Lots of short fish came to the boat today.

Ended the day with one trip up the red can line at the head of the lake; sheep head roundup! We had 3 doubles and a bunch of singles on those lovely critters. One short walleye was the only other connection on that run.

All in all, a satisfying trip. The scenery down that way is spectacular! The wind was blowing but managable. I still have lots to uncover down on that body of water.

The bluffs along the WI side down stream of the Rush are one of my favorites sites…

    Thanks for the report.

Good report, we were on pool 9 Saturday and I mean to tell ya the wind was unreal. Add in that mean storm the day and night before and those fish had a closed mouth.

Tyler and I spent most of the day pulling lead at the DQ yesterday.

All day we had action on saugers and a few ‘eyes. Purple Tiger, red craw and gold sunset(?) were best colors pulled about 165 feet back at 2.5 to 3 mph in 23 feet of water. We kept 6 for the box and the rest went back. Our largest sumo sauger was at 21 inches.

We tried the trolling bite yesterday south of maiden rock and came up with nothing but shorts. Tried rigging live bait at a few spots with only one short to show for it. We decided to try casting to shore and ended up with a bunch of smallies. I always say I hate bass fishing but man they put up a fun fight. We landed a few over 17″ so I got my PB smallie. Not the target species but still a fun day.

put in at methodist point by frontenac today. had one nice dandy walleye while trolling in the first 10 minutes. trolled for about 2 more hours and caught one nice crappie and that was it. wind picked up and it was way too rough for my boat so we had to head back
