I have recently purchased a new boat, it is a Ranger VS 19, I love the boat but have been having a few minor problems with my 03 Evinrude. First of all every boat I have owned in the past you push the key to prime and once it starts you lift the choke and your off and running. This boat I see you push the key for full choke. The problem I have is not getting it to start but getting it to stay going. It starts every time but then after a couple seconds it kills. It takes me 4-5 starts to keep it going. Does anyone have any tips or advice for me. Thanks in advance.

Just push the key to choke it a bit more until it gets warmed up. Just tap it when you hear it start to die off. Fresh gas, plugs, can of seafoam and then get it out and run it for a while.

You could be loosing the prime in the fuel line. I had the same prob with my merc and found it to be there was a small leak in the priming bulb. I replaced it and haven’t had a problem since.

    Bryce,

I have to get to Bobs in bellevue soon for Oil anyhow, you can either tag along or I can grab the spark plugs for you. Sounds like an easy fix. Also the seafoam is a great idea! I still need to get out in that boat!

I have a Ranger 482vs with a Johnson Faststrike 175. If you idle up for a bit, usually 30 seconds.. does it get any better when you idle back down?

My faststrike dies unless it warms up. Like a car, RPMS are always a little high for the first minute or so until you pop the idle down. It is also a little tempermental… If I fish for 30-45 minutes then try to restart and put it into a slow gear I sometimes have to push the chock in while running. Just a couple of quick taps on it.

Other suggestions are valid & should be checked. If you have exhausted all other options, then it could be that you have to stand on 1 foot, the second Tuesday of the month while holding your nose & depressing the throttle to make it go. A lot like my first car basically.

If you have a faststrike and have any more questions let me know.. I chased something called “Heat Soak” for several months to no avail plus plugs, wires, oil experiments, gas, additive, etc etc.
