I probably shouldn’t get started on this, but the ‘no budget’ thing is really starting to get annoying. How’s about I just post what I perceive to be going on and hopefully someone from the DNR can set me straight:
Last year there were “budget cuts” to the DNR; whether these were actual cuts (i.e. less money) or the Washington-style cuts, where a 20% increase in budget is “cut” to 10%, I don’t really know.
One way or another, to the not-so-casual observer – me – it looks like the DNR officials have thrown a huge temper tantrum and chosen to make the cuts in ways that are the most visible and annoying. No more mowing, no more road maintenance, no more ramp maintenance, blah blah blah. I’m assuming that they’re trying their darndest to generate public outcry.
Needless to say, their going to get an outcry from at least one Iowan. I didn’t see anywhere in the budget cuts any plans to hold off land acquisitions that have been planned. If your kids were starving, would having more seem like a good idea? I didn’t see any cuts in study activities or administrative costs. Apparently people who mow and do road maintenance are ‘non-essential employees.’
Seems to me that if I made a list of the functions that I consider important, general maintenance of public lands would be right at the top with fish & wildlife management.
