made it to red wing today. tried to stay away from the other boats and chase the big girl but with only little luck. my friend broke his line on something… we were pitching jigs into the slack water around the cuts out of the main channel. wondering if anybody had better luck today with the fast water

From what I’ve heard today you aren’t alone.
From a decent bite yesterday to a tough bite today.
March 29, 2010 at 1:34 am #858226The only bite I found was out of my lower unit and prop from the hidden green can below the high bridge by the power lines
March 29, 2010 at 1:39 am #858228F&T, Oh no, you found one? Sorry to hear that. I’ve been posting comments about them on here as much as I could. There are at least 4 cans just under the water that I know of.
How did your lower unit survive the encounter?

That’s no good. I was wondering how many of those were hiding just under the surface waiting to be hit.March 29, 2010 at 2:10 am #858246Quote:

Oh, Francis! That stinks! Ben and I hope to be heading that way in a couple of weeks. Make sure you get them all marked for us please!

Oh no…are you going to be ready to go for the Sturgeon Excursion?
March 29, 2010 at 2:21 am #858257Well, I think it could have been alot worse as I’m only calling it a bite. The shaft seems fine, the prop will need work/replace, some filing to remove burrs and some new paint should do it.
From what I can tell, only the motor touched the can. I didn’t hear it hit the hull nor do I see any green paint on the hull. It could have been a lot worse. My son, Tyler was a little freaked out by the experience but this will only make him a little wiser.
March 29, 2010 at 1:57 pm #858350That will buff right out….
Spend enough time on the river and it’s bound to happen! Marks Pro Shop (And welding) can fix that in a day. Drop it off in the morning and pick er up after work!

March 29, 2010 at 2:05 pm #858353What a bummer!! I always wondered how all those cans get so many dents and scrapes.
March 29, 2010 at 3:10 pm #858396I was going by the Vermilion and noticed something wasn’t right. Then the green nav marker popped up from under water to about a foot or two above water!
It went back underwater while I was getting my video camera ready then it wouldn’t do it again.
Getter fixed up Francis, there’s a 60+ with your name on it at the Excursion! (or maybe it said Julie, I didn’t have my glasses on)
March 29, 2010 at 3:55 pm #858432Went by a boil where a can should have been–there is was below the surface, seen very nicely on the SI.
Be safe and go slow out there with the debris, well as the sunken cans.

or maybe just his Catlike Reflexes?
March 30, 2010 at 1:00 am #858681Do all these buoys “cans” show up on the new humminbird lakemaster chip?
March 30, 2010 at 2:45 am #858722No not at all. Doc was talking about seeing it with the underwater side imaging.
I did notice on the Lowrance HDS-8 the day markers are listed. The navigational cans can move for many reasons. I don’t know how they could be listed on any chip with any accuracy.

Wingdams, yes.
Cans, no.
Over the years, I’ve dropped icons on many of the cans along my common routes, just in case.
Now that the river is on the fall, the cans will start to reappear. But even at a stage of 10-11 ft, I noticed a number of cans that were underwater….and we won’t be back to 10 ft for the better part of the next week.
April 1, 2010 at 12:35 pm #859636Thanks.
Never knew about them…I usually find this stuff the hard way. These cans in a specific location by the bridge?
Trying to figure out how to miss them if possible.
Or once the rivers drops a bit you’ll be able to see them?Al
April 1, 2010 at 12:58 pm #859650The green can that I hit was below (down stream) of the high bridge just about to the power lines towards the center of the river. It would be the second green can below the bridge.
Stay towards the red markers as you approach and round the bend in this area and you should be fine.
Oh, new lower unit, prop and labor for my motor is going to cost me (insurance) $2323.15.

See Jason’s post above
April 1, 2010 at 1:31 pm #859666Does anyone think the river will have dropped enough by this coming Monday to make these cans visible?
jhalfenPosts: 4179April 1, 2010 at 1:32 pm #859667I counted 4 submerged or partially/sometimes submerged cans, reds and greens, between Baypoint and Everts yesterday. Collected some cool Side Images of them as well, and will post them later today. The receding water will make these obstacles less of an issue in the coming week, but there’s still PLENTY of reason for caution on the river right now.
April 1, 2010 at 1:38 pm #859672Thanks for the update. Are most of these cans located in the middle of the river or mostly the deeper river channels?

The cans mark the outsides of the deeper navigable channel for the barges. Even the ones that have moved are still closer to the outside of that channel but I wouldn’t recommend getting comfortable out there. If you know what you look for (turbulence), you can see the cans location despite them being under water.April 1, 2010 at 3:19 pm #859724Quote:

April 1, 2010 at 3:30 pm #859734Theres another green can under on the side of carlson island. Saw a lot of boats flying by it yesterday. Was just waiting for someone to hit it. When do they fix all the cans for placment? Saw some of them no where close to where they should be. Even a few doubles must mean it gets really shallow there!
