Does the snow insulate the ice so it won’t get thicker? Does the weight of the snow push down on the ice and does it get thicker as it sinks? Do the fish quit biting and feed for shorter periods of time? All good questions “grasshopper”… Any thoughts – anyone…

Hello Boy there are so many different ways this can go.Yes snow will insulate and slow down the ice getting thicker. But depending on the ice thickness and the consistincy (wet our dry) it could absorb water and freeze thicker ,which I’ve seen many times.Soon as we get snow on the ice the oxygen level in the water starts to drop because of lack of sunlight getting to the green plants(coontail). This will just about stop a good bite right in it’s track until the spring thaw. You will see some of the best ice fishing in about the late Feb. to early March as the snow melts off and the sun starts getting higher in the sky giving it more power to those shallow dark bays. Good luck STEVE
