I have been wondering this for a long time, but where exactly do walleyes spawn that live in the river?? I have always wondered this…I know on lakes that they will either migrate up small tributary streams or spawn on shallow rock/gravel bars. On the river, will walleyes move up smaller river like the Vermillion or Trimbelle to spawn? I’m curious…

Jake, the MN DNR develops and maintains hundreds of Investigative Reports regarding all types of fish and wildlife. Report #481 of 1999: “Seasonal distribution, habitat use, and spawning locations of Walleye and Sauger in Pool 4 of the Upper Mississippi River with special emphasis on winter distribution related to a thermally altered environment” by Ickes, B.S., A.G. Stevens, and D.L. Pereira provides great information about Pool 4. A shortened version of this report was published in the Walleye In-Sider some years ago. The article emphasized that Walleyes spawned in a variety of habitats. Some fish used flooded off-channel habitats with flooded timber, bulrushes and reed-canary grass. Some fish used cobble substrate in side channels and some fish used side channels and wing dams near Lock and Dam #3. Read the DNR Investigative Report and find out exactly where Walleyes spawn on Pool 4. The report provides specific locations.

Some years ago the d.n.r did a study on pool 8 walleyes, the fish had transmitters implanted in them and they tracked them for approx. 1 month, the most unique thing that I remember is a large female who spent alot of time in the gravel pit, left the area and went north to spawn, she traveled over 60- yes 60 miles in a few days, dropped her eggs and was back in the gravel pit a few days later. So they do travel aways to spawn. and it seems they prefer certain areas, maybe back to where they hatched, like salmon?

    Now if I would say…

“you mean to tell me that huge walleye dinner we had the other night came from pool 2??”

You wouldn’t be one step ahead of the warden anymore.

I’ve played softball with Perch for years.

If he can stay one step ahead of the Warden, the Warden must be pretty slow…
