I want to head down the Wisconsin channel from Evert’s one of these trips. How bad is it to get past the closing dam just upstream of the WI public launch? Is that the only closing dam on the upper pool 4?

Brad, with all due respect…if you’re asking that question I would recommend either waiting until the water is higher or go with someone that’s been down that way before.

The closing dam is a prop chewer this time of year if your motor isn’t raised. Still it’s always a good idea to raise your motor.

There’s closing dams on most if not all the cuts leading to the main channel…but that’s not your only concern. The sand bar by the high wires, dead heads in a number of locations.

Again, I’m not trying to steer you away from the back channel, just trying to save you a buck or two.

Sometimes it’s marked, sometimes I come by it’s not. You can read the current over the dams either way. During the spring and high water, it’s never really an issue. However, like any navigation on the river in areas like this, I trip up and take my time.

I have a 60hp yami on a 16ft lund pro v, trim the motor up and idle over it. this works for me. If someone reads this and tears the lower unit off there boat, don’t say I told you this works for all boats. water level varies.

Have someone who knows the lay of the land show you the safe (low water) path over the closing dam and through the backchannel.

Incidentally, here’s a look at the closing dam in Humminbird Side Imaging and Down Imaging.

even in the spring, i’ve always just trimmed up and idled over, and have never hit it.

it has been a couple years since i’ve gone over it in the spring though, so a lot could have changed.

Yes there is one trough that is deeper that you can go through. It is not marked with the buoys right now. It only gets marked towards the summer. You can idle over it with the motor trimed all the way up. Not sure where your looking to go, but from there you wont be able to get a whole lot farther. Or at least I would suggest not trying to go all the way down. I would wait a little longer til the water comes up, depending on where you are trying to get to.
