Unless things changed over night I will be standing on top of ice at Genoa in about an hour….
February 14, 2010 at 3:30 pm #842327yep pool 4 the ticket for now there pushing small boats of the shore on the Wisconsin side of pool 12 fishing up & down there
February 14, 2010 at 5:09 pm #842352Be careful at Genoa. They opened 3 gates. Don’t know exactly what that will do to the ice but you wouldn’t see me walking out there after that.
February 14, 2010 at 9:13 pm #842413It will be many days before the Gordon’s Bay landing is useable. I’ll keep you posted tho.

Quite simple actually. Current picks up and erodes the bottom side of the ice sheet. Ever take a garden hose to block of ice or even run water from the kitchen sink on an ice cube? What was once 10″ of solid clear Mississippi River ice quickly dwindles. What makes this even more dangerous this time of year is two fold. People have been fishing this area hard for 6 weeks now and the surface “looks” just as supportive “today” as it did “yesterday”.
The majority of the ice anglers in Genoa trek across current seams hidden beneath to reach the humps or wings on the MN side. I know of one individual that put a spud through last Thursday when the lockmaster had 5 gates up. I also know the bite has been inconsistent with a lot of sorting when a feeding window does hit. Risk/Reward JUST not worth it. These fish will be accessible via BOAT in 2 to 3 weeks.
February 18, 2010 at 2:18 am #816300By the way……
Seen two boats on the upper end of the Pool 9 channel this afternoon. Most likely put in at the Genoa Power Plant landing but I didn’t drive down there to see. I do know both ramps at Blawkhawk are frozen and there were no vehicles parked at the Victory beach landing. Makes Genoa or the Bad Axe the only other possibilities & doubt the Bad Axe would be open.February 18, 2010 at 3:01 am #843455I know it’s not much closer than pool 4 but I did see 2 boats launched at Belvideer landing off of highway 00 south of Alma on Sunday. You can check with Jared at the bait shop in Alma on this.
February 18, 2010 at 1:37 pm #843506Is the Falling Rock Bar still in operation? I do not see any posts any more from the owner of the bar?
February 20, 2010 at 8:34 pm #844397Yes, the Falling Rock Bar is open. I think it is under new ownership, though. I remember seeing a For Sale sign in front several months (year?) ago.
February 21, 2010 at 2:02 am #844470As of today…Gordons Bay Landing is iced in…
They are putting boat in at genoa i’m told..
You can put in at Victory…
Black Hawk landing is close enough…that if someone had a blade on their truck…well it wouldn’t take much thats for sure..
I saw one boat in front of Mn Slough and one at the mouth of Desoto bay
February 26, 2010 at 2:29 am #846464drove from prairie to blackhawk today. River was locked up until I got just south of desoto the channel was open. Went into the blackhawk park and the first boat ramp still has ice from shore to ten foot out but then the main channel is open. Wanted to make it up to victory and the power plant but didn’t have time.
February 26, 2010 at 2:51 am #846479I fished Shore Slough this afternoon. It looked like some body tried to use the landing just west of 1st bridge, landing that goes into the Winnesheik. There were tracks in the snow but still looked like an ice shelf at the edge. I only saw it from the road, I did not drive in to look at it. You may be able to use it if a small flat bottom.
March 4, 2010 at 11:13 pm #849366Landing at the Falling Rock/Gordon’s Bay is now open. The county worked with a back hoe to day to get the ice from the ramp edge. There were boats out, no fish report yet. Maybe tomorrow if I go.
