My father-in-law and I decided to brave the wind and colder temps on Monday to try our luck chasing the sauger and walleye down on Pool 4. We checked in with Dean at Everts upon our arrival to find out how the bite was going…we were surprised to discover we were the only boat he had the entire day. Dean gave us the scoop on colors and presentations that should be working…essentially telling us that we should be able to catch fish on darn near any tactic we chose.
Leo and I put in and headed up to the dam. The wind really died down as the shadows became longer and though the temps were in the upper teens, it was really very pleasant conditions for fishing.
…and we were the only boat on the entire river!!!
Within minutes of arriving up to the dam, our first fish was coming into the boat. Over the course of three hours, we boated well over 30 fish between the two of us. The shallow water bite at sunset also did not disappoint. Sorry for no pics…boat camera batteries were used up by FW taking Christmas pics.
I’m always astounded by the quality of the fishing this time of year on the Mississippi. While other guys are busy chasing potato chips in holes, we are consistently able to catch large numbers of quality sauger and walleye from our boat in late December and January going out of Everts Resort. Now’s definitely not the time to put the boat away.
For those deciding to make the trip to Everts, Dean has the ramps in immaculate shape and has the straight-up information on how to take advantage of the tremendous bite going on right now. Be sure to check in with Dean and listen closely on his color/presentation recommendations.
