I have spent my last few weeks plying the waters on P4 & a few other members had asked about P5 so I thought I would change it up with a trip to P5 Alma area to see what had to offer.I put up a open seat post & within 10 mins I had a couple members, rocheyehunter(Chaz & his GF Brittany) that thought they would like to join me for a days outing. We had decided before going out that our game plan would be pull 3-ways & cranks, being its a good way to put #’s of fish in the boat & to get his GF Brittany on fish when she arrived later in the am.We got on the water around 8am with winds blowing steady from the S at 10mph & not another boat to be seen around. A move directly to the dam area will be the first choice looking for resident or active fish.We dropped 4 lines out with 4 different lure styles & colors looking for a pattern. It didnt take but a couple mins & the first fish came boatside.A small teenage sauger.Im thinking this isnt exactly what im looking for but its a start.Running forward while sliding sideways slowly at .5-1 mph generally will put good #’s of fish in the boat here.We slid most of the way across the dam area without another bite. Suddenly a rod doubled over & its game on! Some good head shakes suddenly a little side to side action a 30″+ Mr pike finds its way to the boat. We make our way back across the face of the dam area working a 20′ break until it drops into deeper water 30’+.Again the rod bends nicely & a healthy 18″+ Walleye makes its presance! I dont care to fish this deeper water as fish dont seem to recoup as well for release. We boxed this 18″ Walleye for table fare & moved on.We marked a good group of fish in 40’+ but I opted not to spend time targeting these fish as they dont seem to release well.Primarily working 20′-30′ the next couple hours we caught a handfull of smaller eater sized Sauger all primarily in 1 area.Around 11:30 Chaz GF called & said she was in town & ready to get out for the afternoon events. We went to the landing had a short break, picked up Brittany & got back out by around noon.I headed across the river & started checking some of the wingdams on my electronics to see if I could locate a group of fish we could target.Didnt see much around the 3 or 4 wingies I checked quickly so we went back to the area we seemed to pick most our previous fish from.We had been running 4 lines but with 3 of us now in the boat why not run 6? The afternoon bite started out kind of slow with only a handfull of fish coming to the boat. But I had noted a color pattern preferance had started emerging. Now running 4 lines with colors they seemed to prefer & 2 off colors, just to keep the fish honest. The activity seemed to pick up with the change, allthough size wasnt quite what I had hoped for. With a few doubles & a tripple coming as the afternoon passed.A few more Northerns from 28″-30″came to the boat, which allways leads to a little excitement. You just never know when 1 of those Northerns thats bending that rod nicely might instead be a 28″-30″ Walleye. We finished off the day with a handfull of Walleyes with a couple going home to eat & numerous smaller variety Sauger 25-30 as well as a handfull of Northerns, which seemed to be very aggresive as they all had the lures T-boned (sideways) in their jaws. Both my guests handled those fish like pros! Glad I could share the day with this couple & hope to see them again soon. Best of luck fishing all. WHITE TIP
