I have some glow ringies…. but don’t know of any ‘doos that glow. The times when I was throwing the glow… I didn’t pick much up. Not really my confidence color anyways.

I’ve done some messing around with the glow colors and have not found them to out fish a regular ol plastic. I am a firm believer that the fish think the bait is glowing because of “radiation” and it scares them away . J/K of course…….the glow colors have not been a magical bait for me.

Glow colors in the plastics on the river have been the big dud for me. BFT offers a glow k-grub and when fished during a hot bite side-by-side against some other colors, it’s rare to catch anything on the darn things. I’ve played with intensity of glow and it just doesn’t seem to matter one bit. They don’t want it. To be honest, I think it’s a bit of overkill since these fish usually key on dark and natural colors… purples, blacks, blues, oystershell, fire-n-ice, etc. and usually don’t make a move to the bright colors until later in the spring when the water dirties back up again. When that happens a purple w/ chartreuse tail is one of my favorites.

But that’s just my findings…. you’re mileage may vary.

Glow ringies. That was my go to bait last winter at this time. Jigging saugers and walleyes. Never did try pitching shallow with them. The ringies had a chartruse tail on them. Have not given them a try yet this year but they sure earned a spot in my box.
I could see them not working well in low light conditions. I always tend to switch to darker patterns at that time also.

i’m not sure about these so called “glow” baits…..i was at cabela’s last week and saw a display for some kind of glow jigs or something. they had a bunch of different jigs all out of the packages lying in a case under a black light. the sign said something like “WOW, look at the intensity of the glow”…..yeah, right….do you think i’m some sort of fool ?? doesn’t just about anything intensly glow under a black light?? sorry, but that display definatly did not sell me on the glow thing

YEah… they like to do that at sports shows too. Even my white t-shirt “glows” when it gets near a black light. My personal opinion on this move towards products that glow with ever increasing intensity is that in most cases it’s too much – overkill.

I have had success on mille lacs using glow jigs and minnows through the ice during the winter. What I found was that I needed to “charge” a bait and then let it “rest” for about 10 minutes before fishing it. The intensity of the glow would drop down to a very dull level and it seemed to increase my catch rate over a similarly colored non-glow jig SOME of the time.

When I would fish a freshly charged glow jig I did catch the holy heck out of the eelpout though. If you’re into that sort of thing…

If I can find some paint I may try just the tips of the tentacles. Any suggestions for colors for night fishing? On the other hand the doos and rings I ordered might work well enough that I may not need to fish at night?

How about the glow jig heads for on the river? I see Fin-Tech is supposed to have out some glow for there knuckleball jigs. Anybody have any idea when they will be out? With the bright line I use and some glow jigs I’ll look like a Christmas tree. Have had good luck with glow jigs ice fishing but have never tried them on the open water.

I’ve had the same results with the glow jigs… not one of my more positive experiences. But a guy doesn’t need to charge the jigs so the “glow or not to glow” choice is up to the angler to use as the situation requires or warrants. Since glow jigs typically cost more, I usually don’t throw them. If the cost was the same, well, that’s just an added option a guy could only benefit from when the opporuntity presented itself.

Through the ice, just before dark on a lake like Mille Lacs, I know I’d have a small glow jig on one rod though!

Guys on Upper Red Lake swear by the red glow spoons and jigs available… Scenic Tackle makes some good ‘uns.

    Mike W… a question if I may…

Were you charging that glow ringie or just using the “off-white” color of a typical glow “as is” without utilizing the actual glow capabilities? Thanks in advance.

I’d interested to hear some more opinions and findings regarding the use of glow products on the river… plastics, jigs and maybe even crankbaits. Yeah, cranks. Renosky makes some glow cranks that I’m sure somebody has tried by now. I did use some of the shallow divers, the glow models, up on mille lacs this fall and they just didn’t “hit” for me. The plugs were a bit more aggressive in action than what the fish were responding to at the time so that had a lot to do with the lack of production I’m sure.

Neither Dustin or I have really done a ton of research and testing into these products so I for one am quite interested to hear what others have to say about them and how they’re using them.

I have had good luck with the glow jigs with a minnow for bait below the dam in the spring time. The water is dirtier then and I feel it helped the fish find my bait. Fin-techs new jigs should be out very shortly. I haven’t tried glow jigs with a regular superdoo or ringworm in the fall/winter but that just might be a very interesting combo to try. Hmmm. Thanks, Bill

James…. not to steal Mike W’s thunder… but he put me on the glow ringers last year too.. and for sure they were hot then… when I was with him on pool 2 we were just dropping them to the bottom… the sun did all the charging that was done.. and that day the fish switched to junebug once it got darker.. but during the bright afternoon they loved them….

James when cranking time comes again if you want to give them Renosky’s a try give me a hollar I have both sizes and all 6 colors. You’re more then welcome to give them a good workout. I didn’t have much luck with them, but didn’t give them a very good chance either, had more luck with jointed raps last summer.

As rivereyes said. just used sun light. Water conditions last year on pool 2 where very clear. To the point where you could use a camera at 25′ and see very well with no lights on. Go figure how a glow bait used on a bright day in clear water would work so well.
