Well with the water temps way above the seasonal average I was expecting the bite to be very tough, but it was actually better than I thought. Started the morning before sunrise pitching cranks to some shallow rip rap with nearby deep water, the eyes were not big on size but were the most aggressive I have seen this summer. They were inhaling the JSR5’s and actually had 2 fish leap out of the water like they were bass.
We moved to a 2cd location before the sun rose above the bluffs hoping to catch some eyes before they moved to deeper water. After hammering some nice smallmouth on a point we got more than we bargained for in the next bay. I set the hook on a fish in less than 2 feet of water and knew it was not a smallmouth. After fighting the fish for 15 minutes in less than 3 feet I finally got to see the fish and it didn’t disappoint a 35lb flathead was the pay off.
Once the sun was high in the sky I decide to find some current and troll some raps in a little deeper water. I found the key to be current, more current equaled more fish. We managed a decent number of 15-19″ fish with a few over 20″. Below is a picture of the biggest eye. With the very low water be very careful outside the channel I found a few stumps that are now looking for a lower unit to make friends with.
