Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but I’ll give it a shot, and if it’s not, hopefully a mod can put it in the right place!
I asked for advice on this board several months ago about where to stay and fish near/around Red Wing in August. Several people recommended Evert’s Resort, so we went ahead and made reservations.
First off, the staff there was super friendly. We were able to get our licenses, bait, lures, ice, and just about everything else right at the shop. And Our cabin was probably 25 yards from the water- nice! And the price was fantastic- even had Direct TV in there for us.
Thursday was slow going. We fished wing dams near the lock & dam above the cabin and got a few small smallies and one nice catfish (!) using cranks and spinners before it started to rain. And boy did it ever rain. Tornado sirens and the whole bit. It rained all night and kept us in the cabin where we made the best of it by playing cards.
Friday we headed down to Pepin. The rain was so intense from the night before that there was debris all over and the water was pretty dirty. We got several small saugers and 1 nice smallmouth, but again, nothing to write home about.
Saturday, however, was a great day. We got some advice from a guide at Evert’s to try a backwater slough not more than a mile or so away from the cabin. He originally feared that the access would be very shallow, to the point that we might have to get out and walk our boat through, but due to the reain, the access was a little deeper than he originally thought, and we made it through to head up to where the Cannon River and Vermillion River dump in.
As soon as we hit the moths of the feeder streams we started getting hit. Hard. I boated my personal best walleye right off the bat, a 27.5 in dandy that was just over 7 lbs! We had 2 boats and both boats were using primarily shad colored and metallic red & blue 7′ diving cranks. I guess those walleye and northern had moved in to sit at the mouths of the streams, because that’s right where we found them. The water never got deeper than 10′ there either.
My friend got a beautiful 25 incher just minutes later while jigging a green grub and boucing it off the bottom. And the other boat put two walleyes in their boat over 25 inches within about 5 minutes of each other.
All told, we caught 7 walleyes over 5 lbs that day, and we had about 14 fish total that we kept, between the ‘eyes and a nice pig of a smallie and a northern. We also got broke off a couple of times by some very big fish! What a day!
Anyway I can’t recommend Evert’s enough for their help and courtesy while we were there. I guess Dean was away on a trip, but the folks managing it were helpful and knowledgable. We will be back.
