Quick Pool 2 Update

Got out on Pool 2 Sunday afternoon. Caught and released five walleyes between 12 inches and 25 inches over 3-1/2 hours on the water. There seemed (to me) to be a fair amount of current for this time of year. An 18 inch walleye nearly ripped the rod from my hands…I thought it was a catfish the way that one the bait.

Sorry no pics…I was running solo.

Crankbaits pitched at the front faces of wingdams took all the fish. Water temps arount 71 degrees. I had three crankbait sticks rigged up…one with a relatively shallow running Grappler Shad, another with a harder-wobbling/ deeper running Renegade and a third with a tighter wobbling/deep running Bomber.

All three baits were effective and no particular color stood out.

I’m speculating these fish are being triggered when the bait runs right in front of their faces. It’s very gratifying to continue locating these fish this late into summer .

Mike and Rootski…good running into you guys at the landing. Rootski, very good to make your acquaintance. I’m glad to hear you guys got on some fish too.

It sure was a nice afternoon to be on the water yesterday. Cool temps, light breeze. Very nice for this time of year. Steve and I started out trolling cranks on a flat north of 494 and found a few saugers hanging out there. Running crankbaits in 10′ to 13′ of water with the lips hitting bottom triggered these fish to bite. We did manage on walleye at the airport trolling the ricks there.

Part way threw the evening we switched gears and started pitching shallow rocks hoping to find some white bass or a stray walleye. No luck on either of these fish but did find a fair number of smallmouth and sheephead. 1/8 ounce H2O jigs and paddles seemed to do the trick here.

It sure was a great evening to be out. Not many walleyes but we still caught a ton of fish. It was good to see a few of you guys from the site down there to. How did the rest of you do?

What a great afternoon to be on the river! Thanks again Mike for putting me on some fish. And it was nice to finally meet you Martin and to see Patrick too! This was one of those afternoons I’ll be remembering in December when I’m dodging ice floes and can’t feel my hands or feet

Picked up 5 fish on Saturday. All on cranks. Nothing real picture worthy. Should have done the chores Sat and gone Sunday. You guys picked the better day!

It sure was a nice afternoon for catching sheepshead and channel cats. I caught a half dozen of each on crawlers. Cranks produced one hook up that shook loose. One lone walleye was caught by me on half a crawler. There sure seems to be a lot of minnows in the water now compared to two weeks ago. Good to hear Martin and Jon were able to find some decent numbers of walleyes. It gives a guy some hope till the water cools off again.

Was out Sunday as well. Trolled up 4 walleyes with cranks and caught just one or two with jig/leech/crawler combos. Tried pitchin a draggin jig/leech combo and pullin it right throught the rocks…..caught channel after channel with this approach but no walleyes….but those channels fight like the devil so I was all smiles. I found the bite to be quite a bit better for bigger fish late last week before the temps dropped…so I’m hoping that will pick up where it left off later this week again. Did a quick drive-by of Mike and Rootski on the dunes … good to see you guys.

It was hard to come in yesterday…

Got out last night and just to be different I only used the fly rod. I didn’t do much of anything until the sun touched the tree line, and then I started catching Smallies. I was using a black/chartreuse Lefty’s Deceiver on a sink tip line. Right in the middle of this, I hooked a 24 inch Carp that went 50 feet down river about as fast as I can say “50 feet down river”. He had me in the backing right now and I was pleased to see that the drag on the fly reel worked OK! He was a thick 24 inches and fought as hard as any fish I’ve caught all year.

Was out last night for a couple hours. Not too exciting. One walleye, one white, and a couple sheepies. A barge had moored up in front of a series of dams that has been producing for me lately and was diverting the flow into the channel. That was the end of that. Been fishing mostly north of 494 lately…gonna head south tonight/tomorrow.
