We hit Pepin on Friday to try find some walleyes and sauger. I’ve never been there this time of year, but we wanted to pull some lead and see what we could find. We didn’t get a huge number of fish, but had some nice 18-19″ saugers and some smaller ones mixed in. We also caught a few sheephead which always put up a good fight. This trip though will be about the ones that got away. We had stretched out a trolling run to check out new water and one of the shorties doubled over. I grabbed the rod and couldn’t move the fish. We reeled up all the lines and put the boat in neutral. I still couldn’t gain on this fish. We started backing up to it, and I reeled in about 3 colors, when the fish gave me a couple good head shakes and broke the line. Two hours later we were passing over that area and my outside rod doubled up and the fish took off screaming out drag. Before I could grab the rod, it was gone. After looking at the GPS, this was within 50 feet of where the last one got away. Sure would have liked to see the fish, but I guess I’ll have to wait to catch them another time. We mainly fished 20-23 ft. because thats where we marked most of our fish. We didn’t great, but I thought I would throw up a report because I haven’t seen any for awhile. It was a great relaxing day on the water, using 2 lines apiece , and most of all getting to troll some leadcore and watch those rods double over.
