Trying to learn my way guys….

Had a little luck learning walleye fishing this Summer. Can you guys tell me when the walleyes usually start biting well again? What water temp in the Fall, and do you still fish Summer areas?

Lived on pool 14 all my life and just starting to get into walleye fish’n.

Well Otter, I grew up on pool 10 and 11. Fishing for fall walleyes is great. I don’t think there is a magic time and place that they start biting. Seems that a lot of people refer to the vertical jigging bite below the dams as the end all, be all bite. Look for that to start Mid October- later November. If you are willing to put in the work now, you should look at the pool 14 reports- there are some tanks coming in right now. However, if you have just begun and want to know a very vital technique to learn and expand from there, look for the vertical jig bite to start in a couple months. What’s popular on pool 11 are 1/2oz jigs and ringworms, otherwise try a bucktail tipped with a fresh minnow. Also blade baits work well, ie. one eyes and zonars. What you’ll want to do is fairly simple. Drop your bait until your line stops on the bottom and goes slack, crank up the slack and keep your line vertical, lifting your jig up and down off the bottom. Your normal bites will either come while you are holding it off the bottom in the form of a CRUNCH, or you will go to lift your jig off the bottom and it will feel heavy. Either way set hook and hold on. Good luck, and again, this is probably your easiest way to catch nice saugs and eater walleyes. Once mastered, I would look to pitching jigs and three waying, etc, etc. This will give you the confidence and desire to learn new techniques, without being overally difficult. Good Luck!!

The main thing to remember is, the colder it gets, the better it gets. I had my best day last fall on Nov. 12th. The fish will start moving when the water temps get down into the 50’s. They will hold and feed on wingdams and current breaks. They will gorge themselves on shad and minnows trying to get their fat layers built up for the winter. By late October and November alot of the fish will be up at the dam or near their spawning sites. They overwinter in the tailwaters or in the river holes. But that doesn’t mean you can’t catch them. Locate the schools of shad, and the walleyes will be close at hand. Good luck!!
