Made the 0.6 mile journey down to the town landing yesterday. Have to say DeSoto town landing is the cream of the crop on this secion of 9 in high water conditions. No current. Dock. Parking for a dozen or so rigs. 3 to 4 foot column to the main channel. All for $1 American dollar on the honor system. Now for the bad part(s)…..

Hit five spots before the goldcracker paddle on a quarter pyro keet H2O landed the only two fish of the day dragging. Two whopping 13 to 14 inch marble eyes. These boys was staged on a 15 to 20 foot break 10 miles from the tailwater. Surface temp started at 41. Four hours later it was all the way up to 42 degrees a stone’s throw from the channel.

Feeling overwhelmed with all that success on the walleye, I headed deep into the sidechannels. Warmest water I found was a small shallow water bay off Humingbird slough at 45 degrees. Thrashed the water with a variety of plastics and Strike King spinners pretty hard looking for a spawning pike. Hit up two other sloughs with similar conditions and results. Who ever coined the phrase “3rd time is charm” is full of [CENSORED].

Oh well…just goes to show on some days the fish just win. Still enjoyed myself and cannot wait for my next trip.

I don’t chase walleyes but I have found the same thing with the pike. The back waters I fished for the past week have gone all the way from 40 to 50 degrees. Those guys were there last year cutting my spinner and cranks off but not now but it was much later into the spring. For 5 times out I managed to boat 3 hammer handles. All I ran into were those nasty bass.

I agree with the little Desoto landing. It’s perfect especially with the higher water. I was in there last Friday and trolled most of the day. The debris in the water made it very difficult to troll but managed a 16 and a 19″ and talked to a guy pre-fishing for the WAT and he had a 20,21 and 22″ trolling. Normally this time of year you could get these fish on one pass instead of all day. The water temp Fri was 39-40 degrees. RH
