Maybe he should’ve taken the bait out of his mouth so not to tip off anybody as to what he caught it on…..give me a break…to each his own. Congrats on a great fish is what I’m thinking. The best part of fishing is finding those spots that nobody else knows about anyway.
John SchultzInactivePortage, WIPosts: 3309March 26, 2009 at 2:42 pm #762813Even in Erick’s edited pictures with the shoreline scribbled out, I would be willing to bet that most guys that fish pool 4 often could tell where he was by the shape of the squiggles. There are no secret spots when there are 500 boats fishing a 10 mile stretch of river.
March 26, 2009 at 2:54 pm #762816Redneck,
There are actually walleyes in Katrina????? don’t let the FLW guys figure that out.
Heck, I’ve hooked a big carp before and even that attracted boats–but to it’s defense, it was a big one.
Thanks for keeping it real guys, it’s only fishing.
Still think Eric should be in charge of all photo editing.Jeremy
BomberAPosts: 649March 26, 2009 at 7:20 pm #762924Isnt it illegal to put a fish in the livewell and take it somewhere for a picture then release it?

Not in WI.
From page 8 of the 2009-2010 fishing regulations:
“Any fish you take into possession which you do not release immediately is part of your daily bag limit even if it is released later.”

We asked an MN Warden that very question this weekend. His response was that “Possession” was when the intent is to “Keep” the fish. Now, if we were stopped by THAT warden, that may be the case. But do other wardens have other interpretations? That is a question that may land you in court to find out the answer.
We have many tournaments in the Spring that are “Live Release” which would fly in the face of a “Possession Limit” by the purists thinking that if one puts a fish in the well…he or she has reduced it to their “Possession”.
By the way, this is not culling or upgrading either which is illegal in most bodies of water. You are not releasing a “Picture fish” to make room for another fish as would be the case in culling or upgrading. Follow your gut. If you do not feel that your acting in the best interests of the fish, or at least handling the fish in such a way that you will not do it additional harm or stress…then don’t do it.
March 26, 2009 at 8:10 pm #762943Hard to believe how many people flat out disagree with P4’s assesment. I’m not one of them.
March 26, 2009 at 8:20 pm #762947I just take pics where I catch them, I cant see haulin a fish just to take a pic and I cant see not takin pics for fear of others actions, and most of all I cant see a reason not to show pics of such fine specimens. Its a big river and the fish are always moving. And in the end its still just fishing
March 26, 2009 at 8:36 pm #762953The sadest part about this hole deal is that I am new to IDO and that was the first pic that I ever posted and it burns me and others that a person/s would have a problem with the back ground of my picture. With rising water levels the fish already moved again and will keep moveing, its a river. I think that its far fetched to beleive that all the fishing pressure on a spot is from a few lousy pics posted in a forum. Sorry if I offended any one but this is crazy!

Ben, you just keep catching AND posting pics of your fish, PBs or not. THAT’S what IDO is all about. Sharing stories and successes.
We go through this sort of angst every spring. Should we or shouldn’t we target spawning walleyes. Are we or are we not hurting the walleye populations in the river. Should we or shouldn’t we put a photo fish in the well for a few minutes before taking its picture. Should we or shouldn’t we show the shoreline in our pics. After being here for a handful of springs or so, I now recognize that these discussions are as regular and predictable as the rising waters.
Don’t sweat it, have fun, and keep participating on IDO…all of us appreciate you being here!

Well said Jason!
March 27, 2009 at 12:39 am #763052I will try to face the middle of the river and snap away, I also try not to have everybody waving the net around waiting for the fish to come boatside. I have also been known to throw a marker bouy out in the middle of nowhere just to watch how many boats come through and fish the marker. I have no complaints to those who accidently catch a fish out of season targeting panfish, and I have no problem with them putting a great story together with said fish. I do have a problem with a few people coming across as Hollier than thou and chewing the poster a new one. This is where some of us can be better, or I’ll have my mom call you out. She always said,” If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all!” Thanks mom!
March 27, 2009 at 10:21 am #763170Ben
,We should have snapped some pics of yesterdays fish, would have had the carp fishermen from near and far on “our spot”
Give us something to whine about other than the dang wind.March 27, 2009 at 1:16 pm #763217The picture posters are clealy in the majority here yet they’re the ones getting riled up.
Guilty of their own vanity.?March 27, 2009 at 2:12 pm #763254This is America, land of the free–I’ll take my pictures anywhere I want and post them happily. What is next, censorship, book burning, gasp–gun registration!!!!!!
Next we will all be wearing a scarlet letter, ridiculed and banned–worse yet, someone throwing 1 oz sinkers at our boats and letting the air out of our trailer tires. That was a beautiful fish and great pic–take Jason’s advice on this one.

March 27, 2009 at 6:56 pm #763356Where is that spot? Laugh guys. Relax and lets all catch some fish.
Good Luck to all.

les_welchPosts: 1007March 27, 2009 at 7:13 pm #763361I went through this (different situation, but similar in a way) on one of my local home waters, last summer. Maybe you could have done things differently, maybe you wouldn’t have, even if you could have. Its all water under the bridge now, pun intended . It really makes no difference, as you broke no laws. Do as Jason says above, and by the way, Congrats nice fish.
March 27, 2009 at 7:38 pm #763372Post the pictures! My lord. If I ever catch a 10+lb walleye you better believe your gonna see a photo album. You’ll also have details right down to what color of underwear I had on (before & after)!
trxy4Posts: 1March 27, 2009 at 9:14 pm #763410The pictures should have been taken on the floor of the boat. No that wouldnt work. Then the people may know what youre carpet looks like and the fish spies would have that as a clue. How about a net cam. The fish wouldnt have to come out of the water, and the picture could be photo shopped in. Then there would be no more contrversy. I love the photos. Keep them comin. I promise i wont go to the secret spot if i see it in a photo. SSSSSHHHHHHH….
March 27, 2009 at 9:39 pm #763416I can’t beleive that everyone is still talking about this. Just think if it was that buck that was “the new world record” in buffalo county. Instead of 500 boats every day there would be 5000 boats driving by . If someone was smart they would charge admition to “their” honey hole. But that is kind of hard to do on public property Maybe everyone should just keep fishing and worry about what is on the end of their line.
March 27, 2009 at 11:43 pm #763444Well, I think the points have been made on both sides of this issue. In sum, it wouldn’t hurt for those of us taking pictures to use a little discretion regarding the background. But I think we should all keep in mind that it’s not something that every angler is thinking about when they snap a photo of a nice fish. And sharing fish pictures and fish stories is what IDO is all about. Let’s not worry too much about the little things.
I’d say the message has been sent. I ask that we move forward and let this thread sink deep into the IDO archives.
Have a great weekend everyone!
