boat ride vs. not a good idea picture

Unless you enjoy 60 other boats around you, and 50 of them not even knowing how to fish the area or spot you are fishing, might be a good idea to have a seat by the motor, and have a buddy shoot the picture from slightly above you in the bow, with the water as the background, rather than a distinct shoreline.

Just something that needs to be brought up once in a while.

Since there are bridges all up and down the river I have heard a bridge in the background works too
    Sorry Jesse, couldn’t help myself

    Excellent idea P4walleye

Last week there was big discussion and solid debate over giving a big fish a boat ride to everts for a picture. A boat ride to everts for a picture doesn’t sound that bad after some individuals take pictures with easily identifiable shoreline structures and features, in the background, which in turn draws a surplus of anglers to an area that has maybe seen less anglers in the zoo of other places.

I do like the picture of the bunny with the pancakes on the head though. That’s pretty good.

Actually, i used to think the pressure from all the boats hurt the fishery. But, i may be changing my opinion. After witnessing the insanity last Saturday, it might be that that the unbelievable number of boats being pointed in each and every direction are giving the fish a fighting chance. Clearly the bite is not that great. And even the guys fishing at night are seeing the numbers drop as a result of more pressure. So the fish don’t get beat up and tackle flies off the shelves. Everybody wins, right?

    Thanks Rich

In defense of the anglers who have identifiable objects in thier pictures:

Some people get excited when they land a big fish and it is not exactly #1 on the list when a big fish is caught to worry about what is in the background. With the excitement of a first time hog and the spur of the moment ” quick take my picture” for the hope of a successful CPR and hurry up and get the line back in the water to do it again , the background is the last thing on MOST, not all, peoples minds. Also unless you are anchored by the time you do get the fish in the boat and the camera out and photo taken you are well downstream and or up wind of where the fish was actually caught.

I can see what picture he is reffering to though and it is quite obvious. I try not to make it a point to put obvious pictures up ,but my skills on the computer make it not even noticeable anymore. I agree with him in a way though as well.

I guess I disagree. There isn’t a spot I’ve ever fished from the dam to the head of the lake that I haven’t witnessed boats on at one time or another. If there are sacred, unfished spots on the upper reaches of Pool 4, god bless the guys who have been able to keep them a secret. The best thing is there are a ton of current seams that hold fish right now as they labor upriver to lay them eggs.

I am with you Glen, and Erik knows exactly what I am talking about. I have personally witnessed a simple online picture turn a spot that had 3 boats on it one day into 40-50 in the general area the next. It’s not a secret spot type of deal Kooty, it’s a bringing pressure to an area I am fishing type of deal. It happens, it’s just annoying.

JJ-if you get excited and snap a silly photo-awesome-it’s all good-just don’t post it, or edit it like Erik does. I get excited too , that’s what it’s all about, and I take all sorts of pictures that take in the background, because that’s the scene I want to remember-I just don’t post them.

    Just keepin it real

Yup, send it to Eric for editing.
He could be the offical photo editor.

Like Glen said, the boat pressure has to effect things to some degree.
Also, for those wondering why the bite was a bit “off” this past weekend, just look at the water temps. last weekend–took a huge plunge due to the influx of melt water. With walleyes being a cold blooded creature, one can see why things get effected systemically. A good example of this cold water effect is wading into a cold swimming pool, yup, you get the idea. Once you get used to the “new” temp., then it’s not so bad. Think about it somewhat the same way with fish. Now, take that and add fishing pressure–better hope for a reaction bite (blades) or dance a bait right in front of their noggin (split shot rig).

I personally like taking all my pics on Dean’s dock.

The toughest bites for me have been when we have rising water, but dropping water temp, probably what was going on last weekend-and the other one in about late September when water temps are between 60-63.

    Really????

Is a picture of somebodys PB a “silly” photo???

And just from my own personal experience when you start a topic like this it draws more attention to said photo and topic than there would have ever been if you would have just simply PM’d the person that posted the photo that you are jealous…..I mean upset about. NOW there is more attention to detail because of the attention you brought to said photo. Negative attention is attention. I am only telling you this of my own personal experience.

One more thing , on the river down there when there are approx. 300-500+ boats on the river from the dam to the head of the lake EVERY spot is going to get pressure and if someone sees one boat fishing an area they are likely to move in and then there will be 3 or 4 others to follow and then next thing you know there is 20 boats there and all you did was fish a spot no one else was. Thats how the hook sets when you are fishing that many people in a simple stretch of river

What is more annoying to me are posts like this one slamming someone for posting a pic of their PB eye. I have had more than one member tell me that they will not post pics of their catch because of fear from getting criticized by posts like this one and that is a shame. Anyone who has fished pool 4 for any amount of time already knows that shoreline anyway and all the newcomers to the river will have no clue where that shoreline is so to me that pic gives nothing away.

Steve, I live about 400 miles away and even I know that spot is a community hole. There were about 50 other boats fishing it with us last spring.

I’ll admit that discretion is sometimes needed in posting pics on the internet, but if one is worried about fishing pressure, why fish Pool 4 at all? That’s the last place I’d be if I didn’t want some company.

And, gentlemen, I think it would be more appropriate to PM or email the poster of the picture if you have concerns with his picture. A friendly and courteous private message would probably do a lot more good than embarrassing someone publicly in this manner. It would certainly seem to be the respectful thing to do.

I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this, I thought IDO was classier than some of these responses. I tried to do this in a polite and professional manner, but now I must respond. I am not taking any offense, I know who actually catches fish consistently out of the people that replied. Don’t quite know if Glen agreed with me or not, but that guy is a killer stick.

Somebody has to be the “badguy” publicly or the same stuff happens over and over and over, by other people. I could have jumped right on and mentioned this in a couple PB posts but instead, I turned it into a just a reminder- separate thread. I don’t care if you like me. I am not trying to be one of the chronies that jumps in to take down anyone that makes any sense. It was textbook how the chronies jumped in on this one and the boat ride one from last week. So fun to watch for me and many others I know.

There are 2 reasons fish take a boat ride. Take a guess on one of them.

James, I still consider this site one of the best out there, I hope you don’t have to waste time out of your day to deal with this post. p4.

Several of us, if not all of us from the Management Team will be fishing Pool 4 the weekend of April 3rd. Rumor has it you might find us sippin’ suds at Everts or the Bluff’s Bar and Grill after dark. We look forward to meeting more of the IDO regulars. See ya there!

Classy, polite, and professional? P4walleye, I’m not trying to bust your chops here, but I don’t see it the same way. Classy and polite would have required you to send the guy a private message or email. I understand that you think you went about this in the right way, but I disagree with how it was handled. It doesn’t mean we think you’re a bad guy. We just happen to disagree on this issue. I can assure you that James and the rest of the Management Team feel the same way. So, the message I’m sending to anyone interested, if you have a problem with someone’s photos, as k yourself if it really matters, and if it does then send the guy a private message. Don’t take it to the public forums, please. This will always be the standard response you’ll find here at IDO.

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you want to chat about it. I don’t mind at all. Or, perhaps we’ll run into each other at Pool 4 next week. If I’m in a good mood, a guy might be able to talk me into buying a beer or two.

I didn’t think this post was getting heated at all and I totally understand what you were trying to say P4. Many people will read it and take something away and think about it before their next shot so you accomplished what you wanted. I tried to throw a little humor into it because we are talking fishing here. Good pictures, bad pictures heck even live fish dead fish it’s not life and death to any of us but maybe the fish. I think the whole picture thing is part of the learning curve. I know one of my boys first nice fish many years ago I posted without thinking about the background. Apparently everyone and his brother knows the snag coming out of Katrina’s because I sure took some good natured guff over that I survived but I guess Katrina’s isn’t my secret honey hole anymore Hope to see all of you on the river soon and I may even hit you up for that beer Wade!
