Have not been able to get this post written in the last couple of days, so thought I better ‘gitter done this afternoon.
My friend, Steve, and I headed down to Pool 4 this last Wednesday. I mainly wanted to get the boat back into the water, and run her around a little, to get it ready for this Spring.
We did take along a couple of rods to do some vertical jigging. It was great to see Dean, and he helped me stock up on some of the latest plastics using my St Jude’s Dinner gift certificate from last Spring.
We headed up river, and made 2 passes in the Y, and caught 3 Saugers on our first drift, then headed up to near the dam on both sides. Fishing was slower up river, than the Y area. And there also was a lot more ice chunks to deal with, some of these pieces were huge, about 3 feet in diameter, and over 12 inches thick. DO NOT run on plane in the dark yet, wait a week or two til the ice melts.
Water temp was 36 and water visibility was about 2 feet, we used SuperDoo’s, and the mini PaddleTails in 24 to 28 feet.
We caught about 12 Sauger/Walleye mix, with the largest at 17 3/4 inches. We were only able to stay for about 3 hours, but was great to get both of us thinking about Spring and open water fishing.
The next month and a half is about the best time of the year, and fishing will only get better.
Thanks Steve for getting out.
