I braved the cold yesterday afternoon for a few hours with my father-in-law. The bite for my boat has been slow so far this winter, so I didn’t have high hopes. Because the fish have been so finicky I decided to downsize my presentation, so I picked up a few packages of Evert’s 225 paddle tails. We pulled up to the first spot, a sand break from 10′ to 18′ and started pitching blades. In the first 20 min. we managed to catch 4 fish from 14″ to 18″. I switched rods and started pitching a 225 paddle tail (I don’t remember name of the color. Hopefully Eric will chime in.) on a 1/8oz black Evert’s head. That coupled with a slow lift and hold type retrieve is what did the trick yesterday. We ended up with about 25 fish in 3 hours of fishing, with the biggest being a chunky 25″ girl. Sorry no pics but we had some technical difficulties with the camera.

Good seeing ya yesterday Josh. The last 2 days has finally put some wind in my sail to get back out fishing.
The color you are reffering to was Kings Ale. I have a package sitting on the counter for anyone who is looking for it. Glad we had the little chat about the paddle tails before you went out
Will hopefully get out for myself tomorrow afternoon and see what kind of damage I can doJanuary 30, 2009 at 3:50 am #742859Good to hear some hearty souls are finally getting out again. I’m going to try for sometime this weekend…Need to pre-fish for next weekends “guys weekend out extravaganza” out of Everts Resort.
I assume you were pitching blades and going vertical with the paddletails. Did anyone try dragging at all? Curious to hear how you did if this was a tactic.
January 30, 2009 at 4:58 am #742862I will also be putting in at Evert’s this Saturday a.m. 1st time ever at pool 4… Will definitely have to pick up some of the “secret” weapons before I head out!! I will have the 17′ Polarkraft. Say hi if you see it…

Water temp is around 35 to 36 degress depending on where you are at, and yes the water is crystal clear. You can see a good 3 feet

From my understanding yes he was pitching blades but towards evening he was also pitching paddletails. I dont believe he verticaled at all. I do believe he also was dragging and caught a few fish that way.
The one boat I had out yesterday were vertical jigging the small paddletails also and thats what they caught their fish on.
January 30, 2009 at 1:08 pm #742895I think 3 feet is an underestimate if it is still like last week. That water is about the clearest I have ever seen it. Hope to see you soon out there Eric. I am thinking maybe tomorrow if it fits the boys schedule!

We were pitching both the blades and the paddletails. We did try dragging twards dark and did pick up a few fish. Again the 225 paddletails worked great. We tried ringers and ringworms bit kept getting bit short.
