We had another day of fishable weather. Someone must have paid Dean a visit to crank in their first walleyes of 2009. Let’s hear it!

If the wind was anything like it was down here, I can’t blame anyone for staying on dry land.

Hopefully the guys who got out were rewarded with some nice fish.

Actually,we had more folks than expected. The bite was pretty good till 9 AM….then was much slower till the evening dragging bite. The wind was awfull this afternoon. That challenges boat control, which influences the bite without a doubt. Hopefully, the early artic freeze is ready for a break.

Marty V and I got out yesterday. We Checked in with Dean and found a few more bags of plastics I couldn’t live with out. I feel like a kid in a candy store there. Every time I walk over to the wall of plastics there allways seems to be something new. Thanks Dean! As for the fishing the afternoon vertical bite was so so. Alot of short fish! The low light dragging bite is what we both were looking forward to. Once we made the change to some shallower water dragging it made the day. For about an hour the nicer saugers a decent walleyestarted popping our natural colored ringies. I will give Marty credit to keeping good boat control in those gail force winds. I think Marty has a couple pics. It was a great way to start off the new year.

It’s sort of a New Years day tradition for me now to get down to the river and start the year out right. Yesterday marked four years in a row now. It was last New Years day that I had to clear 10+ inches of snow from driveway, but we still made it down.

I slipped down the hill quietly Thursday morning, trying not to wake the sleeping. While un buttoning the boat cover I suddenly hear the roar of the ole blue suburban getting ready to clear the ice ridge at the landing. Yep, Dean was already awake and ready for the day.

We started out the morning pitching the rocks near the dam. Perhaps if we had arrived a little earlier the results may have been even better, but we did manage one nice 18″.

While we picked up two nice saugers shallower, about 16-18′, however that bite didn’t last too long and we then slipped into 20-26 FOW. Bright green with sparkle (Dean will tell you the exact color) and oyster blue paddle tails caught all our fish. Bright green sparkle seemed to the best for whatever reason – the biggest reason maybe being that didn’t want to bother changing colors too much – lazy fisherman anyway.

I would say the morning bit lasts till about 9:00 right now and then slows quite a bit. We put our two limit fish in the box at 9:50am and I would say we threw back at least that many shorter fish. We pulled off the water around 10:30am yesterday.

Big thanks to Dean for letting Paul borrow those snow pants. He would have froze his butt off otherwise. Thanks, Dean!

Good luck and good fishing. See you on the water again soon.

Jake, it was a great way to begin the New Fishing Year. I’m glad we chose to stay for the evening dragging bite…It was the highlight of the day. Jake is a terrific fisherman and never complained when the wind gusts blew us helter-skelter. Here are a couple pics…Nice chuncky walleye, Jake.

Yes it was cold, but Jake was really just red in the face because he was embarassed that he had never gotten in on the dragging bite till now.
