I just wanted to throw some useful information everyone’s way as I am having the majority of my trips up on Mille Lacs this fall so far and have had limited time down on Pool 2. Although, I still find time to get down on the river about 2 days a week while the rest of my time is up on the big pond….
On to the fishing.
A few weeks ago, we saw a real good population of fish holding tight to the current swept riprap areas of the river. Lately, I have had limited success here but still should be something to check out each and every time out. Mornings and evenings being best times to attack these areas. The wingdams have grabbed almost all of my attention over the last several outings come night fall. Hairjigs and plastics have been the mainstay for presentations. Most all wingdams that have a little current on them are producing fish right now.
Water temps were in the mid 40’s last night when I was down there. I am not seeing the heavy populations of fish on each spot quite yet as that should be here very soon. I have had to jump around a bit to put together a good night of fish in the boat. Lots of 16-22″ fish with a 3-4 fish per night over the 24″ range being common.
Deep backwater lakes have been starting to produce fish on a regular basis as well. Alot of anglers are using jig/minnows in 8-14 foot depths. I have had my better sized fish come from 3-8 foot of water on either light hair jigs or lighter plastics. By lighter, I am refering to 1/16th-1/8th oz jig sizes.
After the full moon period this week on Mille Lacs, I will be down on the river exclusively.
Good luck to all and I hope this helps you a bit.
