Jon J and I headed out about 8am in his new winter boat. We spent a bit of time north of the bridge with no fish and then headed up to the airport. We found some scattered fish in this area and Jon did a great job of boat control. His jig/minnow combo outfished my hair jigs , even when I added a minnow. His largest eye was 24″ and we had some sauger up to 20″. We stopped at Hog lake for a bit and found it to be calm and quiet. Just one walleye and a couple of rough fish.

It was a decent day with a bit of wind. We did spend 7 hours in the boat. Listening to the football game on the radio sure beat staying home to see it.

We are lucky to have a fishery like that within sight of downtown St. Paul!! That was one of the thickest, heaviest 24 incher I have ever seen! They are eating well.

Just need a couple more improvements to the winter beater. First on the list are a couple of seats.

I wish 7 hours in the office went by as fast as 7 hours in the boat.

Yes, the fish down there right now are plenty thick, very healthy and pretty looking fish. Amazing what a catch and release implimentation can do to a body of water like this. Seems as though each year these fish get a little bigger than last year. I sure love fishing this body of water. It may not kick out the numbers as Red Wing does but, the lack of crowds and average size of fish are worth it to me.

It used to kick out numbers too….. back before th 96 flood it was common for 2 people to boat 60 fish in aroiund 4 hours… and Im talking fish that were averageing around 18″ with many much nicer….. saugers outnumbered walleye about 4 to 1….. after that flood it takes a good day to puts 60 fish in the boat….. though there are still some really nice fish around…..
