Got out to fish Lake Pepin 3 times this week. Tried for a couple different species (Walleye and Smallmouth). Early in the week, I fished strictly smallies and did surprisingly well. I had heard it would probably be very slow, but on a breezy day we caught fish.. Even caught a 40 inch pike on topwater.

Friday Aug 8, went out again for a little early morning smallmouth topwater bite and to do some trolling for walleyes. The topwater bite was non existent and the lake was flat and calm. So we decided it was time to pull some cranks on leadcore. We tried to fish in 15 FOW and caught one nice sauger (20 in.), a 8 in sauger, and a sheephead. Pretty slow.

We decided to come back on Sat. Aug 9 to focus strictly on Walleye/Sauger. No luck, only 3sheephead. It has been very calm the last 2 days, is that the main problem? Anyone have any luck the last couple days? Are we at the wrong depths, should we be using live bait? Or is this just mainly the dogdays of summer? Walleye, I would assume might be getting a little tougher to catch, but the smallies oughta pick up soon. Thanks
