Well it’s that time of year when the kid really puts the pressure on pursue his favorite fish for some odd reason it’s bass. Normally I wouldn’t consider such a thing, but I know when August comes around it’s time for topwater and I can’t even resist those fish exploding out of the water. You only need a couple of different lures and hang on to your rod. Generally my son throws a buzzbait, a Spro mouse, and a scum frog. I will through a Sizmic toad, a ribbit frog and a Heddon Zara Spook. We will both throw a spinnerbait, white skirt with a silver colorado blade.

Having grown up fishing Pool 5 for 15 years I knew exactly where we were going to target. We had one evening and then the next day to get in as much fishing as possible. Early am the fish were all on the outskirts of the lilly pads and mats of algae. As the sun rose in the sky the fish would tuck way underneath and that is when the fun begins. It never ceases to amaze me; one how the fish can find those frogs on top of that thick mat, and two how far they explode out of the water. At the end of the day before we had to head home we found a school of pig eyes in a back cut in 1-3feet of water. What was the bait of preference? The spinner bait, and these fish were crushing them. We also caught eyes back in the pads in less than a foot of water. Where ever there is bait, those eyes are around somewhere.

In our day and a half of fishing we boated over 20 slimers( of which we purposely missed many more), 60 bass, 1 slab, and 25 all important eyes. The next month will be non stop top water then it will be back to river eyes and the full moon on Mille Lac’s.

I know that Pool 4 is an outstanding fishery but when you can get away from the crowds and spend some time with the boy, it’s hard to beat. Pool 5 definitely has its advantages.
