With there being no school on Friday I decided to try and show my son what Pool 4 pre-spawn walleyes look like. I was a little worried that the water clarity would throw off the bite that I had going last week, soon found out we had nothing to worry about. My goal was to find an eye for him via ringworm pitched to a current seam. He had never caught one that way and it took all of half an hour and I netted a 5 pounder for him. The pitching bite was off for me with lots of fish hooked but few making it to the boat.
Now the dragging bite is a different story. I have found speed to be critical. When you find the right speed stick with it until you reach a lull and then I found if I varied the speed the fish would respond. I also found that many of the fish are only bumping our baits. When this happens a quick twitch forward with a slow drop back to the fish actually has resulted in many fish eating the bait. Purple/chartruse was king again today. Many fish were coming unglued at the boat and I’m glad my two younger sons weren’t in the boat because the “repeats” would have mom a little unhappy. We had an unusual amount of male eyes in our area tonight, so I’m guessing with the temps it won’t be long until the eggs are dropped. All in all are numbers were decent, but quality was down. We managed 7 fish between 7 & 11 pounds. The pictures below are a 10.3 and 11 pounds. Couldn’t beat the weather, minus the rain, and a day on the water with my son.
