was up at dresbach from about 3-5ish and managed a perfect eater limit (all 15-17) then I thought I had big mama eye on and it turned out to be a sturgeon. The picture sucks but i’d say it was around five pounds plus. This fish put on a great fight. I’d love to see what a 40″ lake sturgeon would do!

Me too! I’m hoping for the War Dept. to hook one on the sturgeon Excursion. Nice limit!

Thats a pretty big shovel nose… is there any possibility it was a lake sturgeon? Pic is cool tough to make out with out seeing a side shot.

What are defining differences besides the fact that lake sturgeon get much larger.

shoulda come over, i’d have thrown you a bone. I think my lack of river walleye experience and lack of walleye smarts helped me give the fish a different presentation because other boats around me were having no luck and I was doing “OK”

Here is a post with answers Sturgeon post

Yep, hard to tell but from the picture I would call it a lake sturgeon.

you can’t see it in the pic, but the top of the tail has a long (6-8 inch) extension of skin. I think that is one defining feature of a shovel. And the spade shaped head!

my guess with the info provided: shovelnose.

And, the front doesn’t look quite right to be a lake…

Here is a 35″, did it look like this?

I was out with a buddy yesterday when he reeled this little guy in. This is a small lake surgeon?

Yup Little Laker! Those are the dangerous ones that tear hands apart with those SCUTES!

As for the top photo I am thinking it is a lake also because of the tail. The tail on Shovels are much thinner. It just looks too thick to me. When they are smaller like that many times they are miss identified. A buddy was telling me they were only getting Shovels on the croix one time and I bet him that they were all lakers. HE LOST!
