Old Wives Tales

Here’s a little food for thought. I was cleaning a bunch of white bass (yes I do eat them) a couple of weeks ago in the Lake City fish cleaning house when an older fellow came in to see what I was cleaning. I mentioned that I hadn’t seen a walleye in a couple of days and he commented that this time of year the Walleyes gums get red and their teeth fall out and that is why I didn’t catch any. I know this isn’t true (is it?) , and wondered if anyone else had any other old wive’s tale about fish or fishing.

I’ve heard this about pike, but have never witnessed it. The one’s I’m catching on Tonks sure have a lot of teeth right now. The ones I catch out there in the winter also have plenty of teeth.

Thanks guys, what you’re saying is like telling me for the first time there’s not a Santa Clause. What will I tell the family when I come home skunked? Well, I have news for you guys, I did catch one with no teeth the other day, if it had teeth I couldn’t see them, then I let the ole sucker go!

Maybe it’s true, I have’nt caught a walleye in a few weeks. But then again maybe the snakeheads are eating them.

If that old feller’s been around long enough to tell that story, I’d stick close. You’ll want to be in ear shot when he starts telling the truth.

Along with the pillow case you needed a big stick to rap the ground with. The vibrations attracted them.

I personally have never seen a toothless walleye.
But I have lost my teeth many a time trying to catch them
The walleyes never lose there teeth.

You can’t see the toothless ones because they don’t eat when they are toothless. LOL

I caught a toothless walleye one time. This old timer looked at my catch and said it was a Buffalo.

Northerns do lose their teeth. They aren’t able to sign up for a comprehensive dental plan.
