I’d like to say hey to everyone using this site, I just found it today and everyone seems quite helpful! I live up in Minneapolis and am just out of college so unfortunately I don’t have the cash, or a place, for a boat. I still try to get out fishing as much as possible and have never been down to fish the river by Red Wing. I hear it’s great fishing and I’ve really got the itch to fish some open water and was wondering if there’s any decent spots to shore fish. If anyone has any advice I’d love to hear it. I’ve never been down there before so I’m not familiar with the waters at all so any direction would be awesome. Thanks for any help!

Depending on what you’re looking to target, the channel cat and carp bite can be awesome in the spring right in the RedWing Marina. The carp will be in the shallows and the channel cats will be right off the fishing pier downtown( theres a really nice current break there). Corn/ nightcrawlers for carp….nightcrawlers/ cutbait for channels, GOOD LUCK!

There were people shore fishing from Baypoint park over the weekend. It was actually a bit surreal. We were out on the water, 30 yards offshore. On shore, there was a family of 5 fishing bobbers right at the ege of the ice that is covering the marina. About 200 yards beyond them, on the ice, were two full-size pickups parked next to ice houses.

The wall along the river in front of the train station and the dock there can give up some awfully good waldo and sauger action and that should be getting under way pretty good soon. Jigs/minnows, jigs/plastics, hairjigs….1/4 ounce with do.

Swing in to Everts and meet Dean…it helps if you bring some home made cookies that are labeled “For Briank Only”…there is a rock point not too far from the resort. Dean will be able to give you better directions.

Then again if you bring TWO bags of cookies and give one to Dean…there’s a chance that someone will stop in with an open seat. No guarantees…but you just never know

Keep an eye on the Trip Swap Forum for an open seat. Or post that you are looking for one.

Pool 2 in St Paul has some good action as well. If you want to get some cats, fish right in MPLS.

Red Wing is great, but you dont have to drive that far if you dont want to ($3/gallon gas isnt free either!).

First of all welcome. If you want to try fishing from a boat we have a lot of generous anglers always looking to meet someone new and help out. Just put a notice out when you’ll be coming down and ask to see if there is an open seat. You might have to bring the boater cookies. BrianK doesn’t need the cookies. LOL

another good option for nonboaters is available about 1/2 hr south in Alma. The Alma fishing float caters to nonboaters and is able to supply all you need for a full day on the river including a bait shop and cafe. Lots of fish are caught including some monsters. I think they open the 3rd Sat. in march
