Just had to give you an update. Mongo and i were down trying your tips at blackbird , and to say the least they worked. But for some reason our fish were significantly smaller than the 16-18 inchers you said you caught! Like 10 -12 inches smaller, Lots of them!!!!! Using small jig and minnow. You must be using a uncalibrated ruler!!LOL

Aw, come on Chappy! In your case, it was probably operator error! As soon as I get out of this deer stand, we’ll get out for some hook setting! We will have to get down to Pool 4 though, OUR part of the river got shut down!!!!! We can get to the Vermillion too.
TuckNovember 6, 2001 at 9:19 pm #234721Chappy, Was there a lot of minnows and baitfish in the shallows? Also, how late did you stay out?
I did very well Sunday staying a tad past the onset of dark. There was indeed a fairly small window when the fish were hitting hard! I too used some of “EYE-GUIDES” tips, but I managed 5 fish all over 17 inches with the largest around 20-21 inches! Hmmmmmmm??(lol)Jim W
November 7, 2001 at 12:40 am #234723Only stayed till 11:30 ,had to meet the wife at RJ’S for lunch. We did have alot of hits and the ones we caught were only 6-8 inches long. Lots of shad coming out of Mud hen ,even caught one and used it.Tuck,I’ll get ahold of you when i finish shooting the trees and whatever else the damn deer stand behind. Did get one nioce doe in Thief River Falls last weekend and now i’m leaving for Park Rapids for the rest of this week. Good luck!!! Shoot Straight.

I stayed about half hour after you left and caught one more of those small sauger, so you didnt miss out on much. I think I’ll be going down again early thurs. morning and give it another try. I’m sure I’ll see you on the water again. Mongo
November 7, 2001 at 1:43 pm #234727All you guys busting my chops (Chappy!), try getting down there in the evening. Just like ice fishing, the better fish tend to come in the evening. We got 3 deer in Pine City last weekend, and have 3 more to go. I’m off next week, if we fill out, I’m on the river the rest of the week!
TuckNovember 10, 2001 at 3:09 am #234811Now why do you think we’d do that! Here i am trying to be a nice guy and let you know whats going on and you go after me! What about Mongo? Buddy it was nice meeting you on the river also. Thanks for the minnows! I have to work afternoons this week so i might get down there a couple of times.Might also try for some flyiong fowl also.Tuck ,let me know if you want to go. See Ya.
November 11, 2001 at 2:07 am #234816I was back down there early Thursday morning and got skunked. I was working the same stretch from the tressle on down to that first river bend tried jig and minnow and trolling and casting cranks with no luck. The wind was just brutal that morning it was blowing straight down that section of river. There was a few different groups fishing for crappies and were getting a few here and there, it might be something to try. They were fishing fallen timber areas with minnows under a float. Good luck.
