The boy and I made an afternoon trip down to Pool 4 and the results were about as expected. We had 7 sauger over 20″ that all went back and had more than enough eaters to fill a 2 man limit. The wind was a little bit of a pain but it was definitely fishable out there. We were mainly dragging ringworms upstream in the 18 to 20 foot range. 5/16 was weight of choice and the usual ringworm colors all produced fish. Dean has a wide assortment of colors and they all have their day but several of the new ones did well for us. With FYB right around the corner please excuse me if I am a little vague. There is some ice floating down right now so if you make it out take your time and keep both eyes open. We ran into Nick and Buckshot out giving them heck too. It definitely was a little brisk out there, wasn’t it boys. I am sorry to say that with the ice floating about we decided to head in before the evening walleye bite so I have no information on that. The size of the sauger is really phemomenal right now, our smallest fish of the day was a 16″er so if you make it out please be selective and let the bigger gals go. A big thanks goes out to Dean for keeping the ramps open in less than ideal conditions. I’ll attach a couple pics of a few of the nicer saugers.

Let me try again to post the pics—if it doesn’t work this time I will make the boy do them when he gets home!

Yeah it was a pretty ncie day out there, glad I took teh time to fish a little, thanks to Mark coming along with me, otherwise I’d probably spend an hour out there and got off the water after all I was planning on getting out today, turns out after moving all those batteries yesterday, (3 new batteries in the boat) my back was feeling it, I ended up being really sore today, so I passed on the fishing.

Never had any real back problems before, and it’s best to keep it that way, especially since I was going to run solo today, I’d rather not put myself in a situation where my sore back got really hurt. Feeling pretty good sitting here now. Probably be next weekend before I get a chance to get out again

BTW that was Mark Steffes, that was with me

Sorry Mark if you read this. I must have had a brain fart cause I thought I recognized you. Maybe I did and got the name wrong. Be careful with that back thing Nick. That can be some serious stuff. I am taking it easy today and watching the “500”—at least on and off. Walleye for supper tonight so life is good.

    Sippi,
If anything the pictures didn’t do the fish justice. These fish are huge. They look like footballs. When the boy brought the first one beside the boat I asked him if we had a scale cause I suspected it was a record. Once I got my hands on it, it was only 21″ but I bet it was pushing 5 pounds. It was so big around it wasn’t even funny. I wouldn’t be the least bit suprised to see the state record fall for Sauger in the next month. Every sauger we have been catching is just huge around. Hmmm, guess I better go check it out tomorrow!

    Great looking Saugers

I hope to be able to get down there soon, after ALL my travels this month.
    Keep those reports coming.
    Jack.
