Call me old and boring but I prefer to just back it to the water with the trailer.
Brian LyonsPosts: 894September 20, 2003 at 2:18 pm #276840At times in the past i’ve gone to the local ramp on the wapsi river and theres been a snowfall the night befor. Short of dawning tire chains I just tip my trailer and pull my boat off, turn it around bow first, load my minnows, rods, lunch etc and slide down the ramp into open water. Sometimes theres ice along the edge after a few weeks of temps and i keep one leg in the boat the other pushing the boat over the ice until i get to open water. If the ice breaks i’ve got the boat underneath me. Seems that theres never anyone out on the river after the snows come until total freeze up, gets kinda lonely out there by myself but the water in gin clear. I do pretty well at times, electric trolling motors are a big help when waters at winter levels. When im done i throtle up the motor to slide back onto safe ice, pull up the motor so i don’t tear it off on the ice and im home. I back the trailer up , run out the line i need, hook it to the eye on boat, get in the truck and pull my boat back up the ramp, back up to the boat, tip trailer and load. Just wondering if anyone else does this too.
September 20, 2003 at 5:43 pm #276849I’ve seen guys sliding across ice in their flatboats at Bellvue when the pocket at the launch is frozen over. I always thought they were nuts, with 20-30′ deep tailwater just a short distance away. Guess I’ve gotten far to conservative in my old age!
RoosterSeptember 20, 2003 at 8:19 pm #276855The winter launches in the upper pool 4 are kept pretty well cleaned off. Launching is usually a piece of cake. Of course open water fishing is year round here because of the power plant warm water discharge.

September 20, 2003 at 9:22 pm #276649yeah, I’ve done that. Well not exactly like that but I’ve pulled small boats down the access to the water and back up at the end of the day. Anything to “float the boat.”
September 20, 2003 at 10:35 pm #276666Whew! Thanks gator for telling me about the open water there. Locusts started early down here this late summer, old farmers saying is 10 weeks till first frost here, that makes it about two weeks away. It was one week off last year. Thanks h2o, I was beginning to think I might be the only one left. lol
September 20, 2003 at 10:39 pm #276864We’re pretty spoiled up here as we can fish most any day regardless of how cold its been and Steve at Everts keeps the ramps in great shape… launching really isn’t much of a concern on Pool 4. You’ll even see 20′ rangers and crestliners out and about in January enjoying some of the best walleye and sauger fishing to be found anywhere. Beats the livin’ heck out of staring down a hole any day!
September 20, 2003 at 10:59 pm #276865You can run… but you can’t hide. Actually, given the length of those stubby little legs of yours, you probably can’t run much either. What ever. I’ll catch up with you yet this fall.

Okay James, have it your way.
Your old and boring
Brian LyonsPosts: 894September 20, 2003 at 11:31 pm #276264I was going to fish up there the end of october, just didn’t know where yet, Its a big river and full of fish. I’ll probably put it at Everts. Thanks, Read my latest on the reserviour down here, Tons of fish
September 21, 2003 at 1:35 pm #262199I’ll second that one James. I’m afraid that if the river doesn’t get a little more flow before winter we are going to have a lot more ice on the shorelines and in the launches making it a little more difficult to launch the bigger boats.
