Fished near the dam at Redwing Sat. Fishing for was a little slow for us,. caught 6 sauger, 5 between 15&18″one undersized sauger and one 17″ walleye. This was the first time I have fished near the dam in the fall. Obviously I have alot to learn. Saw a crestliner with a FTR decal, How did you guys do? IT looked like you started to hit em pretty good in the afternoon. ……B

Hey Big B, I was in the Crestliner Pro-Am. The morning was darn slow for us with only 2 over 15″. The afternoon did pick up a bit,I think we ended up with 15 fish over 15″. Nothing big, with most fish 17-18″. Only 2 walleyes the rest sauger. Jigging in 12-15′. Next time you see me on the water give me a holler….. Kerry

    Hey guys,

Slow for this boat too at the dam. Made one trolling pass up and one jig drift back… Caught a couple of those same size fish. Headed down stream and ran out of day before we got on them….. Nice to be out. Not jet skis!!

Saw you guys in the C-liner with the FTR decal. Looked like you guys were working hard. Keeping 4 lines down and running clean is key to getting better fish. The water seemed a bit mucked up. Lots of crud comming down the river. Very low flow too.

This was my first look at the dam area since the flood. Wow, what a change. James discussed this in a prior post. The scour hole got bigger, where the were sharp drops, now gradual, snags where it used to be sand and visa-versa.

Hey Hawg, Don’t worry, you’ll know it the next time you see us on the water, only the really hard of hearing folks can miss us! Glad to hear you guys did well in the PM. We left about 2:30 pm, the 193 mile drive is long and we felt guilty that even with our lack of ability we had taken more MN. sauger than MN. guys took IA. pheasants. This of course is due to our lack of birds. Seriously folks I may see you again this fall, my son gets home from basic training 11/10/01 and I took vacation to hunt pheasant & ducks with him, neither of which looks to promising

this fall in our neighborhood. Pool 10 has been weed choked & slow this fall and your only a tad north of our summertime hangout at Lake City. For what it’s worth we caught our fish in 12 to 18 feet of water on blue/lt.blue(modified) ringworms. Thanks& see you again soon……….B

Hi Could you tell me are you useing any bait on the ring worms, or rigging them a certain way?. I was also up at the dam, if I never caught a fish it would be fun just to watch the people and how they operate. I was useing worms, trying to use them up,maybe not the best bait.Although I did get a few up in 12′

Hey Phillip T, I can’t help you on the ring worm question, we did’nt try that. We caught most of are fish with 1/2 crawler.

    Hey guys,

I had my C-liner up there as well… although not up near the crowds. We’ve been doing really well pulling rigs with crawlers and getting mostly walleye and some better fish as well. We are defintiely fishing a bit shallower than most are reporting so that could likely be some of the reason why we’re catching fewer sauger since others are fishing crawlers on jigs a bit deeper and hitting saugers. There are bigger fish around… we’ve had fish up to 7 Lb fishign that area.

Phillip T, when I mentioned we were fishing modified ringworms I was trying not to mention the half nite crawler we tipped them with. I read Beav’s article a while back and I realize the error in my ways. vertical jigging while using bait is no way to fish ringworms, but I just can’t quit. Maybe I can just cut back. But seriously, thats how we caught all our fish….. all seven of them. As I said, I have alot to learn about fishing the river in pool 4. I have to say I learn something almost everyday just by reading this board, you just can’t beat sharing information with folks who are trying the same things in different ways. …..B

PS; remember, friends don’t let friends bait ringworms!

It is that time of year again when my bass fishing slows down and I am forced to go fish walleyes. I was down there on sat. and caught a few saugers off of the wings. And one 26inch walleye in 2feet of water. Have you been catching anything off of the wings yet or has everything been right up against the rocks? I will be spending more time down there now so if you see a brown Ranger fishermen, say hi.

    Hey Eric,

I saw you down on Saturday in your ranger! You’re almost as reliable a sign of fall as the changing colors and cooler nights…LOL I’ve been doing pretty well off the wingies on plain hair. Black and a med. green have been the best for me this past week and we’ve had some pretty decent fish… mostly walleye. Our bigger fish are coming from rip rap up and down the river though!

Gonna’ be back out this weekend?

I was in the boat with Hawg and I believe I was probably getting more bites on straight hair jigs, but hooking more on the jig/minnow. Why? I’m not sure, but perhaps I was paying more attention to the hair jig as I find it will usually produce the bigger fish of the day for me (at least in the past or I have confidence that it will). Not the case that day, but we also left at 3 PM (too early), but weigh in times are not flexlible.

It would be interesting to put the hair jig up against the plastics and see which takes the prize and which takes the eaters?

But no presentation or bait (live or artificial) matters as much as boat control. Hawg handled the C-liner superbly that day and swung my lines in front of the fish—-All I did was reel them in!!!

We made the trip up to Redwing on Sat also. My first time up there. Caught 10 sauger 16-19″. Half on Jig & crawler and half on jig & minnow. We were in the white C-liner Fish Hawk.

Huffer, I think I saw you saturday, you were fishing with a short guy. I also fished with someone. The someone I fished with also thought boat control was important. I told him that if he didn’t get off my backl,I would send pictures of the fish he caught to Fish The River, and ruin his chanches of surviving in the Fedral witnessprotectection program. The only thing that surprised me more than his first fish, was the way he paid his 1/2 of the gas……..B

I did pretty well on plain white hair jigs that I tie. Good size but not alot of fish. I was doing more of just seeing what things were like than going to catch fish, being that I haven’t been out there since early early last spring. I’ll be down there some this weekend.
