Pool 14 Picking Up

Made it out a couple days last week on pool 14, and found lots of very cooperative fish! I worked wingdams Wedensday a.m. with little success, drift jigged some clam beds but could not keep the fiddler cats off the jig, then went to trolling cranks on the clam beds and a few sandbars.
I found the fish hanging on the edge of the bars and beds, right off the main channel. Trolling buoy to buoy was the ticket both Wed and Saturday. Wedensday was big fish day with a very fat 25″ eye going nearly 7#, a 6# and 20 plus# flathead, several eater walleyes, a couple saugers, and a huge carp all taking shad raps. Never caught a carp on crankbaits before, but that one had the trailer hook well in it’s mouth!
Saturday was almost all walleyes, ranging from 16-22″, and very aggresive. Boated 5 nice fish in 90 minutes, and lost several more. Also one fat sheepy when I moved too far from the channel edge. Fish were very tight to the drop off on Saturday. If I moved more than a few feet in from the channel, no fish!
Attached is a pic of the nice stout eye from Wedensday. She hit while trolling down stream close to 4.5 mph, and she had both sets of trebles from a #9 shad rap in her mouth!
I plan to try the pattern again on Friday, if the storms hold off a little while! Will try to post Friday evening.
    Good fishin’,

Rooster were you long lining the cranks or using the 3-way crank method?

SlopBass, I don’t have a pic of the big cat, I did not bring it into the boat. Released her at boatside to save my tackle arangment and minimize stress on the fish. BigJigger, I was trolling lead core and long line. Most fish came on my leadcore rod, although I did not give the longline much attention. Could not keep up with both rods!

Sounds good to me John! I’m really enjoying this trolling bite! Picked up 3 more nice fish today in under an hour before the skies broke loose today. Nothing large, but some nice, healthy 16-18″ fish, as well as a couple small saugers on #9 rap.

Way to go Rooster. I might be fishing 14 next weekend. I have to help a friend pour this garage floor and I was thinking of taking the boat just in case we have enough time to fish. I’ll give you a call during the week. There is one other way, I’m working in Sterling right now(on the Rock River) and if you can get out during the week I’ll take the boat and we can go. Just a thought.
