Made it out for 3 hours last night w/ my daughter and Nubbinbuck. 4-5 hour nights w/ my girl might have been too good to be true-last night she was ready to head in early. Oh well, the river will always be there.

We fished from 5-8pm and did OK on cranks. In 5-7′ we caught decent numbers of smallies and sheepies. 10-12′ produced 14-17″ walleyes, the largest of the evening at just over 20′ came in 5′ of water. Mike (Nubbinbuck) had a sheepie on and I was just holding our position in the current. After a few seconds of just sitting still, WHAM she just hammered it. In 3 hours we probably caught over 20 fish. The size was decent too, one nice smallie, one 3 lb channel, one 3-4lb sheepie and the 20″ eye.

Perfect weather, light traffic, average fishing made for a great night on the water.

    Dave,

Another beauty of a night on the river for sure. The cruiser traffic was nearly non-existent on the lower pool, and no bugs to deal with either as we had that nice south wind!

I only put 2 eyes in the boat, the largest was a nice 20 incher that fought hard in the current from an anchored position. The other was a 15 incher that hit a ringworm. That marks the first eye caught on a ringy in quite a while for me. Just realized how much I missed that “Thump” at the end of a cast!

The white bass continue to be on a non-stop tear when you get on them. Pretty much get a fish on every cast till your arm start to hurt! Admittedly, I spent at least an hour playing with these guys.

I also screwed around for a while pulling a couple of lodged stumps off of a wing dam that produced well last year. All cleaned up and ready to go now!

HeHe! Yup, getting to be that time of year regarding the plastics bite. Last year we saw a GREAT ringie bite around the MWC time. Not numbers of fish but they were the dingers. I’ve been carrying them in the boat lately and will be thrilled when I get my first piggie walleye for the summer on one.

I actually got my first timber walleye on a tube last week down on Pool 2. I was fishing for smallies and white bass for a bit down there and took my upper Miss presentations that have worked for me recently and went to pool 2 in hopes of catching a few smallies. Second piece of structure I boated a 22″ walleye from deep within the wood. I was texas rigging a 4″ Yun Garret tube. After a few more trees and only a couple white bass, I could not resist the temptation of the wingdams that kept staring me in the face saying “fish me, fish me”. Of course I gave in and retreated from the flooded timber.
Anyone else pursue this bite at all? Maybe its another new technique for some nice walleyes? Hmmmm… Maybe next time out I will give it more time?

    Thanks for the report Dave..

I didnt try that, but I have recently caught bigger smallies on Pool 2 than in prior years. For years smallies over a pound were few and far between. In the last 2 trips we have caught 7-8 from 1-4 lbs. Not great numbers, but a huge improvement.

I was on pool 3 last night. My buddy put a nice 25 in the boat. 2 smaller ones caught (15 or 16) 2 silvers and some smallies. 1 of the smallies was 15. All other dinks. I have been wingy fishing pool 2 and 3 (4) times this week and each time have taken one fish over 20. I tried unsuccessfully again to attach a picture. One of these days someone should help me with that.

Reduce the file size to less than 100,000 bytes, make sure it’s a .jpeg, and it will work every time.

Gentlemen-I’m happy to report the plastics bite works great-unhappy to say that was 2-3 weeks ago for me. I was doing real well on the upper portions of pool 2 on 4 and 5 inch plastics before the water got super low. They were nice fish as well. Each trip boated at least one walleye that would go 5.5 lbs. The largest one was 6.5 lbs. Then, when the flow was ultra slow, the plastic bite petered out. The last two times down (Sunday was the most recent) I could only manage one ‘eye on plastics. Now bombers, on the other hand……

It sure was fun feeling that unforgetable thump when the walleye hit. Just a prelude of what’s to come.

Dave left out the most important catch of the night. A Firetiger Bomber was responsible for boating a size XL T-shirt. If you can provide the color and/or brand name, it is yours.
